Car trailer renovation
1303Steve - July 18th, 2017 at 10:11 AM

Hi

My son and I bought an enclosed car trailer a few years ago, it looked good and was lined with aluminium propeller plate panels which it turned out was hiding rust issues.

So after a few years of use we decided to give it an update.

It had solid suspension running Torana wheels and front hydraulic disc brakes, so we went to Elf trailers in Ingleburn http://www.elftrailers.com/  and had suspension module made that we could then bolt into the trailer, so it came with 4 wheel electric brakes, 2800 kg springs and a break away brake system.

So I'm busy replacing rusty steel and then we will cover the unit in composite a sheeting.

A friend of mine is using these aluminium planks as car ramps, has anybody got any other solutions, car is about 1300-1400 kg http://www.ullrich-aluminium.co.nz/ladders/tplanks.php

Should end up being a good trailer, Steve.

Those aluminium planks make good ramps...that's what we used to load the Minerva chassis, remember that? It was heavier that 1400 kg.

My ramps are 3m long, so I bought a 6m plank, and cut it in half...much cheaper than 2 x 3m planks.

thanks Greg good idea about cutting the planks, that Minerva chassis was certainly heavy

Gday Steve.

I have one of these for my bike. The quality is outstanding, and they make them for heavy stuff too (lighter cars down the bottom of the list).
It might help.

Steve,
I have the alloy planks as ramps on my car trailer ...... at 2.1 m long and on a reasonably low deck trailer,
they make loading quite easy, nice and light to handle , but strong enough to cope with a lot of weights.
Mine are fixed through a centre hole onto the A frame ( a locator pin ) and locked off through it as we'll

Thanks for the replies, the ramps that came with the trailer are very long and heavy but ideal for low cars, they are reinforced with rebar. I think I will try the Ullrich painters plank

Have you sourced the composite panel yet ?
I got some from a place at Milperra / Revesby... advertises on eBay.... alusign.com.au. ..about $60 for a 2400mm X 1200mm sheet of colour
Bigger sheets in black and white ....good prices

Thanks for that, I don't live too far from there, we're going to go propeller plate on the bottom half and on the nose area

No worries, I used the parfix poly adhesive / sealant from Bunnings......cheaper than Sikaflex....which I swear by,
seems to have the same properties, in the paint / silicon isle .....stops the drumming of panels, along with a few rivets, perfect .

Hi Greg

Can you remember the brand of your ramps?

HappyDaze - August 13th, 2018 at 06:20 PM

That's a bit tough on the memory, Steve...but I think they were Capral planks.

1303Steve - September 3rd, 2018 at 09:48 PM

I bought some Capral planks, so far so good, we will load my sons car on it next week.

Ive been busy with my car and the trailer so I only have it part finished so we did test tow to Gunnedah

Hi

I've made some brackets to hold the Capral planks with lock device.

I made the two rear tailgates into one and now hinged at the top.

I put in some side doors for tying down the front wheels

Hi Steve, That 'Elf' kit looks like what I need to upgrade my trailer.

How much was the whole kit/module?

Cheers, Greg
