Hi guys,
Just a quick and probably silly question: air cooled vw drivers wave to each other on the road in this country? When I drove any kind of classic vw in
Europe, people (with air cooled boxer) did flash their high beams, or waved to me and I said 'hello' too. It was so much fun.
After 10 years break I bought a beetle here in Sydney and automatically waved/flashed at other dubbers but no response so I think maybe that's not a
custom in this corner of the world.
Do you guys say 'hi' ?
Sorry about the stupid question but its very weird.
Especially nowadays, not many of us on the road...
I always do, but I think some of the newer air cooled drivers aren't as aware of it.
You will find all the" new" owners of air cooled are all just "Hipster doofus" and don't know the air-cooled vw driver etiquette of the wave !
They buy up all the old vw's so they think they can be cool, l but really have no respect or understanding of the air-cooled way of life on the
roads.....sad when you think of it
Anyhow that's my rant for the day
Technically it is illegal - in NSW - to use high beam within 200 metres of oncoming vehicles. If there was a mean cop around, you could be fined!
I still wave, anyhow...
I wave to them even when I am not in a vw, mostly get waves back though I do know most of them
Before I moved to WA I share everyone used to give the peace sign, then I moved here and nothing!! Guess it didn't cross the border... But add home to hear it slowing over there
@yasdnil01: Sad but true. I couldn't have said better. A lot of hipsters behind the wheel of air cooled vws. At least here in bondi...shame... iphone, twitter, facebook...pfff.
Thanks for the responses guys.
Wow!
I really need to get my Beetle back on the road!
Always waived the 'V' and received the waive in return!
While living in the US - the air-cooled crowd always blipped their headlights.
Air-cooled VW drivers have always waived to each other... even when Beetle & Kombis were new!
In the late '60's, early '70's - my parents lived in California and drove a 356 SC. Even, Porsche drivers waived the 'V' to fellow Porsche
drivers.
Thought hipsters would be into the waive. It's always been hip & cool to drive an air-cooled VW!
Keep waiving and blipping the headlights at air-cooled Volkswagens.
Zayus.
Arr Yes ...I see now
As it would be so hard for the hipsters to wave to another vw driver when they are flat out texting with both hands as they drive along in there own
little e-world
I'm from country South Oz, I wave to every car.
My missus thinks I'm mad. Get RSI when I get near the city!
Most old car drivers around our way wave when your also in an old car.
I keep waving no matter what. Hardcore dubbers e.g split kombi, ghia know what's this all about and wave.
My car is a 1500 btw. Love it!
Thanks guys.
Kombi owners tend to wave back a lot. When I'm in the Campmobile I almost always get a wave back from other Kombis.
But in the 2006 Passat I've never had another Passat owner wave back...
Agree Kombi owners wave back. Don't give up lets start the trend and do it regardless of the lack of response. I feel good anyway waving or giving the 2 finger salute .. Just need to notice the approaching VW , remember which fingers to wave.
Yes, I still wave to other VW drivers when in My Beetle or flash My headlamps at other older cars regardless of make when in another car.....
I find Beetle drivers usually wave at other VW drivers when in air cooled VWs..... It is great when driving to or from Nambucca Heads after the VW
Weekend..... nearly wear My fingers out...lol..
Back in 1970 I bought a Renault 10 - rear engined but not air cooled... Great car with huge CIBIE rectangular headlamps, and everyone in a Renault 10
flashed their lights at another renault 10.... I have no idea how that was started... no facebook or internet back then.... but everyone just did
it... contagious maybe....
It probably is contagious when you have been to Nambucca Heads etc and many maybe younger owners have caught on.... I just usually raise one finger
off My steering wheel...
