1.8 upgrade
vanderaj - October 18th, 2002 at 11:59 AM

Okay, as most people don't use this board during the day, I'm going to be doing an in-place upgrade of the forum prior to our move from 1.6 to 1.8.

I have a backup of the data and forum files already and can revert if bad things happen, but I'll just add back the hacks we've done if they go MIA.

Once 1.8 is stable, we'll be moving the forum to the new site. This may cause pain but no data loss. The DNS addresses are going to be changed and some ISPs do not refresh DNS as often as necessary to direct you to the new place. So if you find you cannot post to the forum, press "Shift Refresh" - this should force your ISP to reload the file afresh, but even that will not help if your ISP is using seriously broken DNS / web caching gear.

Okay, 1.8 is in. Please test and report back if anything is broken.

I'm going to upload some extra themes, and more icons for us to use.

Go to Control Panel / Options up the right hand side. Click on Edit Profile. Scroll down to the theme and choose Mactastic. Save the profile, and voila.

Once I find more themes worthy of inclusion, they will be.

I use the first them AventureMedia cause I find it easy on the eyes. The Xmas theme you need sunglasses while you're reading it and the Winter theme looks like the nappy I just changed not long ago! The Mac them is a bit bland for me.

Just before anyone gets confussed the address of the new site will still be http://www.aussieveedubbers.com
If you have bookmarked the site http://www.mickmotors.com/forum  then you will still get sent to the site but will need to log in once you are there for the first time, then simply re-book mark the forum.

The rest of it will be exactly the same as far as 99% of the population is concerned. Biggest difference is that the forum is going it alone on its own domain and will no longer be on the Mick Motors site.

We will let you know when it is all sorted, there should be very minimal disruption as 1.8 seems pretty good.

Brad, email me again. I caught a glimpse of it about half a second before I emptied my junk mail folder, which it was in for some reason..

Well congratulations guys. I haven't tried anything fancy yet, but I didn't even realise we'd changed over until now! :thumb

Colin,

this is the early access version - the final version is due next week. :-)

There are a couple of things I've noticed (like admin avatars are MIA again), but I'm happy enough to take this forward to the new site.

We'll have to wait for the final version, I still can't edit any pics. :(

I'll find that hack to edit the pics, and add it.

The html in my sign stopped working, so I had to change it all to BB code to get it to work.

<b>egg</b>

actually someone has turned the html in the posts off

vanderaj - October 19th, 2002 at 12:35 PM

HTML got turned off by default in the upgrade, didn't notice that. But that's okay, and here's why:

HTML in posts allows cross-site scripting (XSS). XSS allows people to steal any of your cookies (ie to Hotmail or to your bank) or infect you with a virus if you use last week's Internet Explorer, or put you into a JavaScript jail (you know the sort when you go to Warez or pr0n sites - window after window pops up and you can't click fast enough to get rid of them).

I think it's just safer to not allow HTML. If someone can come up with a good case, I'll turn it back on, reluctantly.
