Twin Turbo VW Trike at the Jamboree
Baja Wes - September 21st, 2003 at 11:14 AM

One of the highlights of the Jamboree was a twin turbo 1600cc VW engined trike.

It has twin turbos off a twin turbo jap WRX. It had twin intercoolers, and ran modern injection, with a digital EFI readout above the instuments.

The guy is getting 80HP at the wheels, which is pretty good. He is planning on building the 1600 up to a 2.2lt for some more power.

It's good to see someone running decent technology on the VW motor. The guy runs a shop called ;
Thunder Road Performance
PH (07) 5596 6800
They do a fair bit of drag car / street car stuff like Nos systems, alloy tanks, radiators, intercoolers, silicone hoses, race fabrications...

he reckons the lack of mufflers isn't very loud. He said it sounds nice.

Would that have been at Valla?

There was a group of trikes there:cool:

Very nice!

Mate, that's sicka than sick!!!

That thing would have to be an absolute weapon!!! :thumb

I bet its scary on a wet road!! :o At least it has a luggage box to carry the spare Reg Grundies!!! :D:D

I saw taht fing the other day :D its v kool

vassy66T1 - September 21st, 2003 at 05:26 PM

that is the sweetest looking v-dub motor.
Top marks to the man with the spanner!

Dasdubber - September 21st, 2003 at 07:10 PM

Yep it looked very nice. I also liked the yellow manx with turbo watercooled (didn't get a chance to see what it was out of) engine that I am sure ran in the 12's and sounded like it did it so effortlessly (correct me if I am wrong if it wasn't 12.54 - I may have misread?). Quick none the less.

That time looks about right. It had an EFI 13B turbo in the back, and had 13BVW number plates.

80hp? is that all? sounds a bit low to me for that sort of setup...? how much boost is he running?

Peter Leonard - September 21st, 2003 at 09:05 PM

80 horse is heaps for a trike. i have heard of people who put a 1916cc pobjoy steroids in them. talk about overkill. seriously scary stuff. one false move and you're looking at the sky.... :O

cray - September 21st, 2003 at 09:08 PM

i know it's heaps for a trike, but i'm saying for that setup, it sounds very low...

Yes his name is andrew who owns the yellow manx.
Very quick...was still running when I left at 4pm Sun
Don't know how fast he went in the end...

The thing you have to understand is we're talking HP at the wheels. The standard 1600 puts out about 30HP at the wheels. This is the same motor, with a couple of turbos bolted on. So 80HP is pretty damn good out of a basically otherwise stock 1600. He's not trying to overboost it just to get a dyno figure either. He wants reliability and drivability.

Peter Leonard - September 21st, 2003 at 09:36 PM

and he'll be carrying a spare set of heads with him. :D

NCH-003 - September 21st, 2003 at 10:03 PM

Yes very nice indeed....:thumb:D:thumb

sikdub - September 22nd, 2003 at 08:42 AM

Thats pretty schweet. What a neat looking engine. :thumb

I saw that aswell more to the point 80hp rear engine + no weight at the front + towbar with more rear wheel weight - wheelie bars = staring at the sky....:D

Yes it was a great day.
This year it went over both Sat & Sun so the crowd wasn't as massive as has been.
You could easerly get around, toilets, food
pits etc.
It was 31 degrees Sat & probably 30 on Sun.
Still wore sunscreen & still was burnt
but I had a great time.
Good to see the few VW's there.
And also the times they were doing were
still impressive. Pity there wearn't more to look at.
Not to put the Mazda/4 & 6 cyl people down or anything but...
Yes the Mazda/6cyl, etc people aren't as friendly as VW people, rather more very competitive & their cars are more intense.
They are consentrating on engine power
more than us & getting the best times out of their speed, is everything to them.
I do appreciate the engineering that goes into the rotary engineering etc..
and spend a lot of time with these people
as my son loves & owns a Mazda.
So we must respect each to their own...different cars for different people.
Either way I had a great day out & thats all that matters.

What an awesome setup. Very very nice trike, and a beautiful, well thought out and put together engine.

However, if I had spent the thousands of $$ to put twin turbos and what looks like microtech injection, and all the custom chrome / stainless piping on it, I'd be looking for more than 80hp at the wheels.

I'm not trying to bag the bloke - If I owned the trike, I'd never havce been game enough to put a turbo motor on it in the first place. I'd say he must be keeping the boost pretty low deliberately, because for those $$, even on stock heads / bottom end, if you wanted more than 120hp at the crank, you could get it.

However - its still a bloody nice trike, and I would love that motor in my car !!!!:bounce

Baja Wes - September 22nd, 2003 at 02:10 PM

I guess there are a few things to remember. It is a trike that tows a trailer and goes very long distances, so you want reliability. I don't think you could reliably get more than 80 wheel HP from a stock 1600 no matter what. If you think you can get more than that reliably your dreaming.

Just look at Fraser's dead 69 wheel HP turbo kombi and you might understand.

And as for wanting more from that fancy set-up, well he does, that's why he is building it up to a 2.2lt. He will no doubt go for some internals that can handle some boost instead of the weak stock 1600 gear.

Peter Leonard - September 22nd, 2003 at 06:50 PM

http://www.lowbugget.com/turbo_hp_chart.html
this is a single turbo. 1600.
more horseys. sounds pretty reliable, but hey. (thanks for the link, kads/009 thread)
:D

Baja Wes - September 23rd, 2003 at 09:42 AM

There's something weird about the figure on that site. It says, the 1600T at 8psi gave 121.8HP. Then it says that 12psi boosted the power a further 34%. So 134% x 121.8HP = 163.2HP.

Then on another page it says ;
"This kit on a 1915cc with a 110 cam and 7.2:1 made over 150 hp@12lbs of boost"

Now I don't know about everyone else, but I think something isn't quite right. The 1600 has more HP than the 1915 at the same level of boost.

They are also no doubt talking engine HP, so keep that in mind too. Also remember they are trying to sell something.

amazer - September 23rd, 2003 at 10:38 AM

Why on earth would it possibly make over 80hp at the wheels? Its a 1600. The injection system is hardly going to add power. Its only putting fuel in the same as a carb. I reckon there would be quite a bit of lag happening in this case, turbos appear far too big for 800cc to push, but you're looking at a 266% hp increase here!

You need to watch some daytime tv to see what american advertising is about. Look for an ab-blaster 2000 or similar. They can turn you into an Arnold Schwarzenegar doing exercise so light you dont even know you are doing it.

If every 2lb of boost increased my horspower by 15% I'd happily blow heads off all day long.

That thing would be bloody loud. Maybe not open Harley loud, but too bloody loud to have a happy neighbour. Gotta get myself a trike someday.
