Question for the History Buffs..
BenettonVW - September 21st, 2003 at 12:54 PM

Hey Volks,

I have just discovered a fetish for a Split Window Ambulance.. I want one, but dunno about just yet.. ($$)

But if people can tell me about if we had them in Australia, how many were made, where I could possibly find one etc etc, then that would be fantastic..

Birchall, Becker, Leversha, Surie, Holden, Carter, this all applies to you.. Get ya books out.. :)

Thanks in advance :thumb

There was a splitty ambo at the Jambouree. It was ex St. John's. The bloke that owned it drove it from new (or almost) When he retired they retired the bus as well. Now cop this they GAVE him the bus as a retirement present...better than a gold watch eh? He also dropped the news to me that ha had one of those "Helfosi" mirror mount spotlights at home in the shed somewhere and he would have to get around to refitting it. He was a nice bloke as well. I suggested to him that he come up to Sindnee with us for the nationals but he wasn't too keen on that.

Thats right.. Gary Collis also has an imported barndoor too..

Wonder if that St John one would be for sale at some stage.. Maybe he knows a bit more about the history side of it..

vw54 - September 21st, 2003 at 03:22 PM

There must have been heaps of them around years ago... but i dont recall seeing any.

Is that right you want one because you have a Fetish for women in Nurses uniforms ???

come on Jim you can tell us all....

Yes Gary has one thats about the only one i know off...

Did hear of one in Adelaide young Andrew Edwards doug one up from the bushh some where... maybe someone from Adelaide can shed some light.

Grey 57 - September 21st, 2003 at 05:37 PM

I'm not much help really Jim. I remember the one at the Jamboree, but other than in books I dont think I have ever seen another one. What about the military? did they use them in the 60's.

Dave, as long as Jim hasn;t developed a fetish for wearing Nurses uniforms :jesus:D:D:D

Go for the ones in Canberra

BenettonVW - September 22nd, 2003 at 08:09 PM

I heard he was over priced, not that that matters, but..

As I pointed out, either my engagement or the amblieence at this stage..

vw54 - September 22nd, 2003 at 08:17 PM

Mate i will only advise you ONCE on this subject

GO FOR THE AMBULANCE. NOW

splitbusaustralia - September 22nd, 2003 at 09:16 PM

Same busses Jim about seven (?) years ago. Found in Port Lincoln - the front one was driven to Canberra. Quite crusty
underneath and in the sills and asking price was high even then. Beck's pic is of the one behind in my photo and it looks like its been outside since then and deteriorated even more. The front one was very complete at that time though - had the partition, blind, fold down seat, helphos spotty mirror etc etc. I thought a lot about buying them then - but an ambulance just isn't for me.

Daves's right though - if you REALLY want one buy it now - they're won't be any more opportunities. Cry once now rather than cry a lot in the future. In a few years it WILL be worth more than whatever you pay.........

KDFking - September 24th, 2003 at 12:44 PM

I actually owned a 54 LHD barndoor ambulance in absoulut rust free mint condition.I bought it about 6 years ago from some country in europe from the wreckers for $450au.The only time it was out doors was when it was doing its runs or the 2 months when it was outside in the wreckers besides this it was always under cover.Anyway i towed it back to germany and regreatably sold it about 4 weeks later for a disgusting amount of money.I have these photos whenit was at the wreckers but i cant find the pics of when i cleaned it up in germany(it really did look like it just rolled out of the wolfsburg factory).anyway hope you like the pics
