Weight of 1971 Beetle
Kuchster - September 23rd, 2003 at 04:05 PM

Does anyone know the weight of the 1970/1971 Beetle?

Thanks,
Kuch

They are usually registered at around 860kg, a bit heavier than earlier 6V Beetles that were about 740kg.

Pretty light by today's standards.

Thats lighter than a lotus! Stupid light!
Imagine fitting up all carbon panels, like they sell in Germany?

jakriz - September 24th, 2003 at 07:31 PM

My 1971 superbug without the tool kit & the spare, with half a tank of petrol, just the way it is on the track is 890kg without me in it. Quite fat as far as VW's go.
regards
Jak

Jack, that's plenty lighter than most racing car.... Oh yeah yours is a racer :-)
But still yours is'nt gutted to bare minimum.
Far out, that's light. You learn something new everyday! I always knew beetles were light, but... man! I can't believe it.

Anyone got the weight of an early type-3 handy? If it's heavy enough, my fasty is definately going on the market!

Cam - September 24th, 2003 at 08:22 PM

Okay... To put it into perspective!
Minimum dry weight of a formula ford is about 420/425kg
Minimum weight of a V8 supercar (not sure if it's dry or not) is 1350kg (plus 100KG downforce on the front and 300KG on the rear)
So think about what a gutted beetle with lightweight panels and components would weigh. Would have to be around the 600-650 mark, ja?:bounce

Nah it's not gutted Cam, thats full interior, factory soundproofing, plus a heaps of extra soundproofing in behind the velour headliner & behind the back seat, stereo, speakers, roll cage etc, just what u have in most race cars (LOL)

Kuchster
somewhere between 700-740kgs sounds right to Me...
thats for a standard beetle not a Super,
Supers are heavier I think...

Nope your all wrong

Ive been collecting VW Glove box hand books lately and in the back of them these are the following readings according to GOD.

1302 August 1970 handbook so that would be the first Superbug here weighs 870 kgs

VW1500 August 1969 handbook which would cover models here in Aussie up to the Strut super bug weighs 820 kgs

They have some great info in these booklets

See Jak, that's where the F1 teams are going wrong. Need to make their cars roadworthy :D
With the cage and stuff in it, that must feel really nice on the road? Silent too. WEll aside from the unmistakeable sound of webbers ;)

Dave, have you got the weight of an early TypeIII fastback handy at all?

vw54 - September 25th, 2003 at 06:49 PM

I have a lot of the Type 3 manuals but i dont know if they break the weight down into each body style but will check....

What year do you have ??

Anyway i can tell you without looking that there BLOODY Heavy thakes 6 to lift a wagon shell and only 2 to lift a Bug shell.

jakriz - September 25th, 2003 at 06:58 PM

Yeh thats right Cam, I took my friends L-bug road race car with a 2110cc for a drive the other weekend, it's fully stripped, no sound proofing, no stereo, no carpet etc, just bare floor, lexan windows etc, ....man it was loud, but definantly quicker with the weight difference. I then took Paul for a drive in my car & he thought that he was in a limosine! He coldn't beleive how quiet it was & that u could actually have a conversation & listen to the stereo over the 45mm Dellortoes. He reckons it's as quick as he's but I think he was just being polite.

Now Dave, lifting a bug shell with 2 people? you might be thinking of Boris's new drag car maybe:D

Cam - September 26th, 2003 at 12:13 AM

Wanna know something scary?:( I've moved one on my own. GOt inside it and lifted it wiht my shoulders/head and shuffled it out of my garage. LOL
That was a sixties beetle though, without doors, bumpers, bonnet and boot.
But my old man and I have swapped a 60's complete shell onto an IRS balljoint 'pan. Get's pretty wobbly with all the bits on.

I know, Jak. I used to drive around in a gutted beetle, solid mounts, the works. I swear my hearing is damaged from using it everyday. Crazy!
Next time I'm up in NSW we'll have to catch up and you can take me for spin in your beast.
BTW, how's the new motor going.?
I've been absent from these forums abit, so kinda missing alot of the local news

Cam - September 26th, 2003 at 12:14 AM

Oh yeah, Dave. I have a '66 fasty.
Cheers!

555bug - September 28th, 2003 at 01:09 AM

you have got to love VW, thay though of everything :) cause if you can't show the transport department that bookelt that states you're bug is over 800kg then you can't fit a WRX motor :bounce If anyone is keen on a WRX oval I'm very handy in photoshop ;) if you know what I mean.

Kuchster - September 28th, 2003 at 07:00 PM

On the rego papers of the 1971 1300 beetle i looked at yesterday, it said it was 790 kg :(

That means 10kg off for me to put the subaru engine in!

What model should i look at between 1969-1971 to be more then 800kg ?

555bug - September 28th, 2003 at 08:06 PM

don't stress you just need some proof :) u2u Brad (Buggy Brad) he has a nice old book that states some er um ambitious weights :)

Kuchster - September 28th, 2003 at 09:02 PM

Brad - September 29th, 2003 at 09:55 PM

Long story but suits me fine

Cam - September 29th, 2003 at 11:02 PM
