Hillclimb
amazer - September 23rd, 2003 at 05:23 PM

This year is Wollongong Sporting Car Clubs 50th Anniversary and we are holding (subject to CAMS approval) a hillclimb at Huntley on 26th of October. Its a make or break occasion for the club.

Some of you may be aware that there has been a hiatus of Huntley Hillclimbs for 18 months or more due to CAMS track safety requirements increasing to the point of almost stupidity. Well we have done enough to get a track licence, just awaiting now an event permit. Hopefully the new 'officials licencing' policy has left us with enough bodies who are capable of running an event that we have been running for 49 years. Throughout this period the club has had an expenditure of $10000 while income has been just $5000, needless to say it cant go on for much longer. CAMS and liability insurance hassles have almost put the club to rest.

OK, so bitching over, what is Huntley? Its an old mine access road something like 650 metres long. Its smooth hotmix bitumen. It's steep. Its a REAL hillclimb. Has some fast sweepers. Has some tight esses. Its fun. Its safe. You get as many runs as we can fit in. 6 would be a minimum. 20 odd trophies on offer for different classes that everyones car will fit into somewhere. WSCC people are good people, no bitchiness like at some clubs. Booze and BBQ afterwards. If it is on and CAMS think I am capable enough, I am the event secretary and am more than willing to offer to take moneys from people who would like to run. Pre entry is $65. on the 26th it will be $75. Have a go. Its better than sex.

It would be great to see a lot of VW's there, but if you want to run your partners Messrschmidt then thats fine as well. In the 10 years I have been part of it there's probably no make or model car that hasnt had a go at some stage. Vintage cars with manual fuel pumps (guy pumping the lever on the dash) to the latest twin turbo 4wd triple overhead underhanger jap imports. Everything in between, volvos, monaros, dattos, you name it. I can think of at least 3 kombis. few type 3's and more than the odd beetle. Hyundai excels, mitsubishi mirage, toranas, GTHO's, group A's, minis, formula Vee's, a goggomobile (no bullshit, a twin engined one), go karts.... sure you get the picture by now. If its got 4 wheels its probably had a run. Add yours to the list. For me it even lasts longer than sex!

How did I go, can I move on to selling ice to eskimos now?

Keith Haeusler - September 23rd, 2003 at 09:56 PM

Hey Frazier,
I was speaking to Colin on the weekend and he said he`d be competing if it was on. He wasnt sure if it had been cancelled. This is assuming thats not the Bathurst weekend.
Keith.

Well I cant advertise the event yet until its approved, I could get in trouble for that ;) I have the forms sitting next to me right now, I just need to get a CAMS stamp and a permit number and I will start posting.

Just wanted to get it out there so poeple can start thinking.

I need to know what CAMS affiliated clubs everyone is a member of so they can be added to the list of invited clubs.

The best way to contact me is through this forum. Reply to this thread and it goes to my email. I dont like exposing my email address or phone numbers to the vast universe.

amazer - October 2nd, 2003 at 05:45 PM

CAMS have knocked back the permit. The paperwork is being modified as I speak and should be ready to go early next week.

So how do they cash a cheque for a permit before granting a permit? I dunno either.

speedster356 - October 2nd, 2003 at 06:19 PM

Hmmmm, now that doesn't sound like CAMS does it!

"Have a go. Its better than sex."

Jeez, Amazer you must have some pretty bad sex. LOL

"For me it even lasts longer than sex!"

Oh ... 650 metres. Even at 20km/h that's less than 2 minutes.... I guess that's why.

A trip up huntley last's me just 27 seconds, but the thing is, I can easily have 8 goes on huntley hill.

amazer - October 9th, 2003 at 04:38 PM

Apparently these days I dont have to get permission from CAMS to add each club to the list, I just have to make sure they are affiliated & financial, so come on down.

amazer - October 22nd, 2003 at 05:20 PM

This sunday. Lots of entries coming in, but no VW's :(

Peter Leonard - October 23rd, 2003 at 11:27 AM

In club motorsport VW dominates.

A VW powered car has won more outright NSW, Vic, Qld and Australian hillclimb championships in the last 8 years than you can point a stick at. Almost all of them I think. There may have been 1 or 2 missed in there somewhere. It holds most track records. This particular car was built in the the 70's by a wollongong local and has a supercharged type 4 engine in it. Its stood up to all comers, including a specially imported for the even Pilbeam from the UK.

Wayne Penrose has won his class in the series since he started competing and also holds plenty of records. At huntley it has the fastest time recorded by any sedan. (at a normal club meeting at least)

Jeff Unwin was unbeatable when he raced in a beetle. Craig Torrens seems to have taken over that place. Ben Durie's car is right up there. Col Mayman recently won at buladelah. CT Hansen and Jak Rizzo regularly cause havoc in the porsche club.

VW has its class wins at bathurst. Plenty of round australia trials. Shit I even have a few trophies and certificates on my wall from racing a kombi.

VW's kick ass mate. Thats why we're here.

amazer - October 28th, 2003 at 09:26 AM

damn. I saw the speedster down the end of the road. Someone was trying to tell me there was a karmann ghia there. duh.

I initially wondered if it was you, but didnt see you through the day. I guess I forgot to look.

The twinnie driver has a bad back. Just had an operation. I wonder why?
The Fiat was no slug either.
