Blowout
helbus - September 23rd, 2003 at 09:40 PM

Fleur had a blowout tyre in the beetle yesterday on the Eastern Freeway. It was pretty severe as she was going 100 at the time. She felt a vibration and a few seconds later a bang, then the wheel totally locked up. It was the left hand rear tyre. I had taken the spare out to get it changed with another tyre, because it was bald.
So I went and got the other wheel from home and took it to her.
When I took the wheel off I could see the inner tube had come out of the rim and wrapped itself around the axle and in doing so, pulled the hand brake cable tight against the axle and locked the left hand rear wheel.
Lucky it didn't go into a spin?
Then I found a couple of wheel nuts were dodgy. Had to steal a couple of nuts from elsewhere. :o

glad she's safe, could have been nasty!

damn... go tubeless> some bugger put a tube in my tyre in Katherine and it lasted alll the way up the main road and about 3 ks up onto the stuart highway. tubes are for WHEELBARROWS (or non tubelesss tyres :D)

When the rear tyre locked up it fully wore the tyre out until it had a complete hole in it.
She said there was heaps of smoke, doesn't know how she got off the freeway, but stopped in about 100 metres from 100kmh, without applying the brakes herself. :o

A friend who is getting a set of second hand mags for her beetle is giving us her set. I have a friend who will take them off the rims for me, another who is going to sandblast them, and then I will paint them a nice two pack and put them back on definitley tubeless, ad defintley a spare. :D

could've been much, much worse...

Sounds like we should all check our tyres more often. The EH and the bus have new mags and tyres, so I feel ok about them. :)

Cars can always be fixed, but sometimes people can't, so thank heavens Fleur is fine and healthy.

Thats why she didnt spin it!

Kool karma to you two...

helbus - September 24th, 2003 at 09:34 PM

Aha it all makes sense. If she applied the brakes herself then possibly both back wheels would have locked up and a spin would have occured.

Then we would be :cry
