Finally got my 356 Engine
karmannghia60 - September 25th, 2003 at 09:51 PM

Took a while and still a long way from being fit enough to grace the bum of the 356. Been sitting since 1974 :o but turns over ok with a reasonable compression. What do you reckon I should do to it? I am intending on carbies rebuild, pulling the heads off and checking things out.

Grey 57 - September 25th, 2003 at 09:54 PM

Raf you can give to me to fit in my oval. :D

Will these bolt straight into an oval engine bay?

What sort of HP do these make

karmannghia60 - September 25th, 2003 at 09:57 PM

I think it does with some tin mods. This one is just a 1600 normal so it does about 65hp in standard form. Super90s did 90hp. If the b&p are shot, I will make it a 1720

The ultimate retro speed equipment Dave:thumb

karmannghia60 - September 25th, 2003 at 10:03 PM

And I will ditch the 32 Zenith that are on it now and use the 40 IDFs I have (if/when I find the manifolds for them)

Grey 57 - September 25th, 2003 at 10:03 PM

Oh yeah , yee haarr.
Bit more exy than a 1916 I'm thinkin.

karmannghia60 - September 26th, 2003 at 07:50 AM

Dave, its going in here
http://www.bentley.com.au/image/back.jpg
I am going to get the thing running first and see how it goes before any mods. So any word of wisdom on what to do before starting it after 30 years of being idle?

vw54 - September 26th, 2003 at 09:04 AM

Replace all the flexiable fuel lines, brake lines and bleed correctly

Proberly have to remove and pull apart the wheel cylinders and master cylinder as whell in case there frozen.

Clean the fuel tank out with soap n water with some bolts n nuts inside shaken around to break any crud n rust away.

Make sure you have oil pressure in the engine and that oil is getting to the tappets by removing the covers under idle.

jenz58 - September 26th, 2003 at 09:29 AM

That is going to be one very sweet ride:cool::thumb

karmannghia60 - September 26th, 2003 at 09:59 AM

Thanks Jenz, can't wait
Dave, I was referring to what I should do to the engine. The car has been totally stripped and restored. Everything is new or redone. I already replaced ALL brake lines, hoses, wheel cylinders, everything. Same with suspension. Just wired the whole thing but need to hook things up. Bloody nightmare, too much work specially when you work full time. But I love it

That looks like the 75hp motor out of a C.

If you want some performance ideas I recommend the "Porsche 356 Performance Guide" by Duane Spencer. I got a copy at the Technical Bookshop in Swanston Street, approx $70. It is a very useful read and prescribes a good engine combo which will belt out 100HP+.

Your A looks like it is coming along nicely, my C should look like that this time next year.

Cheers

Andrew

karmannghia60 - September 26th, 2003 at 08:51 PM

Its a T5B, the very first of the Bs. The engine is definetely off a B too. I checked the serial #. Ant pics of yours? Can you tell me what parts of the engine bay are covered with sound proofing material?

Grey 57 - September 26th, 2003 at 08:56 PM

What would you expect to pay for a good complete Super 90 engine?

karmannghia60 - September 26th, 2003 at 08:57 PM

A lot. I priced a few prior to getting this one. Its between $10k & $15k if you can find them. I paid $2.8k for this one

Grey 57 - September 26th, 2003 at 08:59 PM

That much eh! Sounds like you got a bargain Raf.

karmannghia60 - September 26th, 2003 at 09:01 PM

The 1916 cost me less than that but I just wanted to keep it original

koolkarmakombi - September 27th, 2003 at 12:22 PM

My vote is for a complete pulldown. If it has been sitting for that long you can get corrosion in the un oiled sectiond of the internals.

That looks like suck a sweet ride and akter spending the best part of three large new seals, a looksee for corosion in the engine, check bearings etc then you can drive that baby with confidence.

pyr0 - September 27th, 2003 at 12:32 PM

i second that last notion

matara - September 27th, 2003 at 12:52 PM

Raf,

Keep it original as possible. If you put bigger carbs on you'll only be tempted to drive it hard! The original engine is so sweet. just wait til you hear it running the sound of the little porsche is addictive! If you want me to take any pics of my A engine for reference, let me know. I just remembered I need to U2U you about the hood handle too! You have U2U

Cheers

Steve

karmannghia60 - September 27th, 2003 at 09:06 PM

Steve, didn't receive any u2u's!
If you can get me couple of pics of the engine bay it would be great. I need to figure out the sound proofing setup. Apart from the firewall and the two sides, any other areas of the engine bay sound proofed? What sort of material is used?

Keep up the good work

Grey 57 - September 28th, 2003 at 08:47 PM

Gotta luv those 356'es. One day I will have one , one day :)

low_63_Dub - September 29th, 2003 at 09:25 AM

Raf

No thoughts on the sound proofing, I got my C as an unfinished project and was completly dismantled. Go to 356 registry website and join the talk list, you a sure to find the answer there.

No pics either at this time. There isn't much to see other than a rolling shell, stripped of paint.
