Got this kool mechanical tach of empi last week. (Thanks mate) Plan to chrome the surround and paint the pointer white to match the fuel guage.

My question is has anyone used one of these types of tachs before? What do you need to drive these things. Drive plate on the engine, cable ect.
I like the idea of the mechanical tach really old skool.

Dean, they usually run off a drive cable that is driven by the distributor. Good luck finding one! :thumb

Sawb a motor from an early 356 a few years ago and it had a mechanical Tacho. It used a small gearbox like thing bolted up to the engine oil pump to drive a cable.Unusual to see one with only 4,000 revs max.

Kol, do industrial VW motors use the distrubutor drive take off thing??

I was aware of the drive take off coming from the oil pump. Fingers Xssed I can find one. Gonna be a really long cable.
Other option is to convert the drive to electric. Possible?

4000 rpms will be enough of a range for a std VW motor. I thing peak power is produced at 3800 rpm. Make nothing but more noise at anything over that. :D
