Paint codes

Dose anyone know anything about paint codes.
I was given a colour and number, turquoise the code is L390 It is supposed to be an original VW colour from 61, I want to get some made up, are the numbers the same for different paint manufacturer's, and what company would have made this paint for VW, IE standox ect.

ROb, check out http://www.autocolorlibrary.com 

They will give you that same code, but also a PPG code aswell.

Ferrari Nero Metallic (BLACK) and PPG CAramel.

Thinking Navy Blue with Original two tone Interior Red+grey.....

I have an origional set of Paint chips for VW. Most place can match the colour to the number you quote.
