Mate if your importing a split oval I would just leave it left hand drive. Why go to the trouble when you don't have to chnage it to right hand drive any more. As for prices I was thinking the same thing but at around AUS$4000 for the transport it does become expensive. Guess it depends on what you can pick up.

i am pretty sure its gotta be a two car box. so u have to find someone doing the same thing or sort one out and wait for someone to find u.

maybe ask the hot rodders if anyone wants to share a container ?

any updates?

got a mate who does corvets,so the conversion would be easy, just thinking if it would be worth it,and how much it will cost.?as i might be able to squeeze it in with the corvets, the main thing is how much i should pay to get the convert done,i know i dont have to but if i did get one i would drive it alot,:D

SKEWtYpe3 - October 21st, 2003 at 10:12 PM

if ya can get one do it
personally i would convert but it'l be yours and if u drive it lots u will get out on the foot path and no need to walk around the bus and maybe get the door taken off...................

Are You talking about a oval split window beetle or a split window Kombi??
Neither would take much to change over from LHD to RHD....
You should be able to do it Yourself.... just get a similar donor vehicle... Corvettes are imported all the time.... that may be the way to go unless some one wants to bring in a Karmann Ghia or
Karmann Beetle Cabriolet...
there are many advertisements for companies bringing in cars in
UNIQUE CARS Magazine
Grab a few phone numbers from there...

Why is everyone calling them oval Splits? THey are a split, not oval split!!! Back to it, I would like to know the same thing, as I am very interested in bringing in a Karmann cab. Let me know how you go, or maybe we can bring ours in together?

I would'nt change it to RHD. The cars are worth alot more in their original condition, not to mention look cooler ;)
Is it a bug or bus?

tracash242 - October 23rd, 2003 at 07:53 AM

Here's the URLs to my RHD conversion and my double door conversion (remember a LHD bus will also have the cargo doors on the other side).

Coupla pix of the bus are here

Conversion bits I did are here:

LHD to RHD conversion

Double door conversion

I took my web pages down largely because of the time they were taking to update - got lots of emails with tech questions etc etc and it was getting to the stage I wasn't answering people. Just pushed for time at the moment.

Would I import and another deluxe and do it again? I would and probably will...

Will cost you $4k Oz for freight and charges to get a bus here if your very careful with costing out your freight agents. Single vehicles can come roll on roll off (cheapest) or in a 20ft non op refrigerated container (if you want to container it).

Cost to convert? Its not hard but takes a lot of time. Probably a weeks full time labour for the front end/floor/dash and a weeks full time labour for the cargo doors - plus cost of donor parts of course.

If I was working commercially I would charge out at a fairly modest $40 per hour - ergo all the conversion stuff would run about $6400 plus donor parts and consumbles. .....

Hope this helps

RobK
