Matara? / KG resto advice
lowrider - October 23rd, 2003 at 07:24 AM

Some advice wanted from you VW sages out there.. I'm finally starting on my early Karmann Ghia. I need a motor for it & have a 1600tp which I could fit with mods to the rear apron tin.
A purist would fit the original 1192cc but where do you find a good one?
The 1600 would drive heaps better too
Any views welcome
Andy

Hi Andy
My '60 Ghia has a 1600 in it without any modifications. What mods are you talking about?

Raf,
its a '58, you need to trim about 25mm off the rear tin to fit the opening.
I'm thinking that keeping it original with a 1192cc
would be the ideal solution but finding a good one??
cheers

My Ghia has a 1192cc and it just purrs along, and is remarkably quick. If you put a 1600 in, then you really need to change the gearbox to take advantage of the extra power, otherwise using a 1200 box with a 1600cc engine will mean that you'll be able to accelerate pretty quick but the car will run out of legs and the engine will feel like its in third gear when your cruising on the highway.

You cant beat an engine that is matched to your gearbox and thats what the 1192cc is. Get a good one and it'll be enough.

Cheers

Steve

Steve, are we talking about gear ratios here?
I've had to replace the original crash first gear-
type box with the later full synchro unit.
perhaps I should determine what its from?
It is from a 6V Vw though
cheers
