Well I think you've made the right start by posting up a wanted ad. You should be able to get something for that price of reasonable quality. The one you looked at doesn't sound too good.

There are plenty of good people in Qld who will be able to head you in the right direction.

Squiz......

hey welcome to the forum.

ur gf seems like a smart one wanting a beetle.

If ur after info theres heaps on here and also try joining one of the vw clubs around e queensland, Club vw, VWdcq, Bad little buggers, Manx club etc.

Ur Gf should be able to get a vw for that price, but i u mite have to trade shabby paint for a better mechanical package etc.

Also what type is she after, 60's model, 1302, 1303 etc? engine capacity?

just keep asking questions its the only way to learn.

Welcome Kieran, if only you were looking at over $2k ... Mattie has a sweeeeeet '57 oval for sale, looks MINT :o

You have probably read up on dubs already and know that the best years are prob '76, followed by 68-69, personally I got a '71 superbug, the thing that killed me was rust, as is the usual story with most volksys.

If your going to get a bug, and in particular a Superbug, look out for rust, in the S-Bug, look for it in the vents behind the rear side windows.

Dang, all the best with the Volksys, its a bug that you won't be able to get rid of!

Where abouts are you ???

thanks for the welcome;) i'm at Redcliffe.. (southside of brisbane) i'm not too sure on the years and models.. i know u can get them in 1.5L 1.6L? which years would be the best to look for? i guessed 1970-1979? sorry i have no clue heh

Well they sort of fall into groups

54 - 57 Ovals

Up to 67

The above are all
6 volt
swing axle
4 wheel drums
torsion front suspension
king and link front end

The 68 to 71
12 volt

Then the Super Beetles
1972 to 75
IRS
discs
12 volt
Mc Pherson suspension

Lazst is 1976
as above but back to torion bar and ball joints

Basically the earlier the more prized - but at a price in safety and parts are grtting harder to find

The cheapest is probabally SUpers. They have the best feature is you like the more rounded look. Front end can be a pain but is easy to fix

The 76 is the prize of the pick if you like torsion bar
