OK, just for those interested in an alternative to either new AMC heads (from Spain) or reco heads that seem to have a short life after having been
done a few times for your Kombi heads, try these guys:
http://www.riechertmotorentechnik.de/
Here's an e-mail from them:
Original heads come from the last production of Typ 4 heads produktion
year 1987, this was the only version that was in production at last.
Heads with valves intake of 37 mm diameter production was ended 7/1978.
Original VOLKSWAGEN Nr. 022101351 D (for the complete head !)with valve
guides and seatrings for unleaded gasoline complete mashined an ready
for complete the head with valves, include tube for oil ventilation 13
mm diameter. Diameter of 105mm for barrels of 94 mm are mashined by
RIECHERT - Engineering to original specifications! Fire room volume is
the same like your heads No different compression ratio if you fit
theese on your engine. Heads are available completed with valves,
springs, retainers ready to fit in your engine. Heads unasembled covered
in the shipping wax grease originally applied by VW.( Not the barrel
area ) Valves, springs, retainers separeted. All complete heads are equiped with original TRW valves.
Basically these guys have NOS from the VW factory. They also have new type 4 cases.
My landed cost was ~$630 each. including freight, tax, duty etc.
Off to get them ceramic coated
Awesome!! :thumb
Did you have to import them yourself? What carrier did you use?
Quote: |
Yes Col, brought them in myself, didn't find anyone bringing them in.
Sorry if the quote was misleading, it was an answer to my question. My '77 2L has 37mm inlet. His reply is saying that size is no longer
available, so I was supplied the 39.3 inlet.
Note the factory addition of the tappet vent line. Haven't seen that before!

Cool, thanks for the clarification. :thumb
Andy wheres that place ??? sounds like good value.
Hey Dave,
Check the link in the top post. Their in Germany.
They are dearer than AMC, but I'm hoping worth the extra $ and hassle
Checked combustion chamber volume on them last night and all seem the same to the best of my measureing. I will clean the ports a little before
fitting though just to remove some daggy casting bits. One minor down side is the studs are bare steel, I think AMC have plated threads.

Well, what a night.
4 hrs later. Only did some minor polishing on inlet/outlet ports as they look fine to me. There's meat there for porting, but I don't think
there's much to improve on for my application.
Noticed something strange, all inlet valve guides seem crimped in place, where exhaust ones aren't. I'm guessing it's due to the temp
each one will be at, exhaust ones being hot all the time probably sit in tighter or something??
Anyway, spent the rest of the time cleaning all the left over flashing from casting. There was a heap in there that will restrict air flow over the
fins. Works poor die grinder got a beating tonight
Time to go home :o
Andy I always do a similar think with the heads and the castings marks or flashing. As you do i get the air grinder and thin cutting wheel out and
clean all the crap out of each individual fin.
Makes the heads run heaps cooler. Been doing this on my engines for years.
Well HPC coating all done.
Ceramic coat in heads (valves + combustion chamber)
Molybond on piston skirts + valve springs.
This is on new factory original heads + KS oversize pistons (boring out stock barrels to suit)
Lookin real good....how much did the HTP cost?
Cheers
Mick
Lots!!!!!!
$290 for 2 heads, 4 pistions, 8 valve springs.
I seriously looked into electroless nickle plating the barrels (external for corrosion resistance) but at $110 per barrel they will get a very light
coat of cold gal spray as I have done in the past!!
