most vw in aus are just cut roof vw bugs(I have one) but did VW ever make a Convertible apart from The Heb (696 cars ever made there is now only 100)
or did Karmann make the rest?? cos as far as I can tell Karmann done really good cut roof job? but they are not made by VW as most karmann Convertible
start there life out as just standed bug.
Thanks RABC
as best to my knowledge, Karmann was commissioned (as was Hebmuller) to produce cabrios.
they were provided the cars by VW to convert them into cabrios.
Hebmuller was comissioned to do a 2 seater, and Karmann a 4.
after the fire at the Heb factory, the last few Heb's were finished at Karmann.
there were no cabrios built at Wolfsburg.
they were all built under consignment.
as far as I know.
does anyone know otherwise?
The VW Karmann Beetle Cabrio was made from 1950 to 1978
there are a fair few of these genuine Cabrios in Australia
After 76 or so Karmann started making the Golf Cabrio and still does.
Does any body know the set up with the New Beetle cab's?
There was also the 4 door Papler, the absolute rare VW.......:o
Did Karmann build them from a complete finished painted Beetle, or from a finished shell?
Karmann did all the body panels... not sure about the guards and bonnet but did a special engine lid as it had extra cooling vents inserted.
The car was complete when rolled of the assy line. Ive been to the Karmann factory in German in about 1991 and seen them producing Golfs and Escorts
and Siroccos in the Cabrio form.
