why do you need the scoops. i have the stock scoops - as part of the car body and i dont have a problem with heating. are you overheating?

kombi_76er - January 10th, 2004 at 03:12 PM

nah ive just heard it improves engine performance and just keeps it that little bit cooler

vw54 - January 10th, 2004 at 05:21 PM

Available from Vintage in Sydney 9789-1777 they have them in stock

vwtyp2 - January 10th, 2004 at 07:29 PM

would the benefits of "scooping" more air into the engine bay be outweighed by the extra drag of hanging a big piece of plastic off each side of your bus?

just my $0.02

Astro Boy - January 10th, 2004 at 08:52 PM

also the build up of extra air in the engine bay is still being expelled through the cooler at the same rate and temp. i am skeptical of their usefulness.

Andy - January 10th, 2004 at 09:24 PM

I haven't fitted mine yet, but will keep a cloes eye on oil and head temps when I do, so I will know then if it improves or hinders cooling. (generally people say they help)
My reason for fitting is not for any gain in cooling, but to keep the weather out when parked :thumb

Dont forget your driving a BRICK through the air so i dont think the extra drag will come into it.

But if it helps cooling the engine then its a plus.

Spook - January 11th, 2004 at 07:46 AM

Yeah, I was sorta wondering why you would worry about drag on a kombi........;)

Spook - January 11th, 2004 at 09:23 AM

$$??

If memory serves, year for year up to the '70s, the Kombi has always had a lower drag coefficient than the Beetle. Colin Chapman once replied to someone who said that aerodynamics was "..simple, what looks right is right..." that "It all depends who's looking."

Elephant ears are fugly.

My mechanic recommended them if I was going to do long distances over 80 kms/hr.:bounce

KOM123 - January 12th, 2004 at 08:30 PM

I don't reckon ours are ugly :(

And if you get hungry, I caught a bird in ours once!

555bug - January 13th, 2004 at 12:10 AM

dose your kombi have a blow hole? free willy

franko - January 13th, 2004 at 11:13 AM

if youre getting all that extra air in,would you also then be able to prop the lid a bit for even more heat exchange?

kombikim - January 13th, 2004 at 01:52 PM

no, that lets the fan suck in heat from the exhaust & dust, the extra air from the scoops helps keep hot air out by force feeding cooler air, they seem to work best for me at 85 to 90 kmh - on an unfortunately long neccesary trip on Christmas day at 42 deg ambient, I founfd the temp going up if I went over or under those speeds on the freeway

Of course, I wasn't referring to *your* elephant ears, just the ones on those other kombis... Hell, yours is yellow and white, can't be all bad...

Bizarre - January 13th, 2004 at 04:04 PM

for my 2c they are like deck lid stand offs on a Type 1
Personal opinion on looks but they will drop temps.

I would definitely run them if i was doing long trips.

My problem is no one makes then for a T2.5 or what ever mine is called :(

vw54 - January 13th, 2004 at 04:14 PM

Barry

Its a T3 remember, hows the sale going

Bizarre - January 13th, 2004 at 09:03 PM

Kom - i just noticed all the other beetles.

Was this some sort of VW holiday???

azz - January 13th, 2004 at 11:51 PM

Mine look fine- white ears on a white Kombi
AND THEY WORK!! atleast 7-9 degrees lower in oil temp guage reading after they were fitted
funkin pukka

Astro Boy - January 14th, 2004 at 07:35 AM

well i may have been converted. i will consider buying them. how much are they and from where? do you rivet them in or what?

57 Panel - January 14th, 2004 at 11:19 AM

don't rivet them on if you plan to take your kombi to the snow. They will cause your carby's to freeze if it gets cold enough.:bounce

Blue it was from last year's German Autofest in Canberra which Flat Four organised a weekend away to.

Astro, you can get clips for them which allows you to screw them onto the body of the Kombi without making any holes :)

Don't know the cost of the scoops as I've always had them form when I purchased the Kombi. I got replacement clips through Volksbahn at Pendle Hill (02) 9688 2933 so they may be able to tell you the price.

KruizinKombi - January 15th, 2004 at 05:33 PM

Yes, you rivet them on, and no, they have never caused my carbies to freeze up at the snow.

I bought mine from Alec, I think they were like $35/pair plus freight, but that was quite a while ago....
