VolksFolks - January 12th, 2004 at 04:27 PM

Think A Melbourne Company Fitted It, But Not Sure? And Why Have The Grilles Down The Side, Could Possibly Be A Genuine VW Fitout, Andy

What you are doing is getting it and sticking it in the backyard... THEN you decide what you are doing. The other way around results in 'gunna' plans and heartache..

If its the original tailgate it is 1961-1963 as they had the recess above the handle. The upper side vents at the rear are Aussie spec from 62-66 so it must be between 62-63.

Doesnt look genuine as I havent seen any high tops with the aussie side vents
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Dave.
give me the chassis number for a more accurate date.

Desert Bug - January 16th, 2004 at 11:25 PM

Andy,
It would be a '63 (Aug '62- Aug '63). These were the first with high vents and the rib along the rear wheel arch, but still had Bullet indicators as this one has. They still had early rear brakes and reduction hubs (1.4 to 1) with small dia axle.
Aug '63 was the change to 1500 motor, bigger brakes allround and 1.26 to 1 reduction hubs with big axle nut. Also wider rear top door and push button front door handles.
Looking at the rear window in the high top it appears to be a caravan type so probably a proffesional full camper conversion. To my knowledge the VW factory didn't do any campers or high tops etc., all these being outsourced by local distributors and agents.
Good find, go get it!

Ian.

Still Hav'nt Clinched The Deal As Yet, Went To See Her Again Today, Offered Cash Mmmmmm She Said, Hopefully Get A Call Early Next Week, A Little Rough But Worth Saving, Also Desert Bug The Chassis Number Is 1113133, German Made (See Pic Of The Complience Plate) I Recon April 1963, Thanks

Andy

57kombi - February 10th, 2004 at 11:46 AM

Chassis number is for April 1963.
Made in Australia, they all had the made in Germany tag. But were made here, as you can tell by the vents above the swage line.

Cheers
Dave
