fatboy - January 16th, 2004 at 06:20 PM

Hey guys need help ASAP.

To cut to the chase what is the easiest way of getting past the steering lock on a beetle dont mind smashing the ignition up and I can get her running, wont be able to steer

i am gathering you have lost keys???

I would first try other beetle keys if you have them.

Otherwise the best way i know of is one of those twist screwdriver things

That will take out the steering lock

Otherwise take the steering shaft out from the steering box and put a differnt one in??

Otherwise take screws that hold it to the body and see if you can turn the locked steering wheel???

Was that any help???

Remove the steering wheel and it all unbolts... Easy

Ignition has been bashed - so even the right key wont turn it.

I have the steering wheel off but cant see where to take the next step ?

HELP - the car wont survive the night if its left where it is

What model is it??

Mine is a 74 L (duh - the name :D )

First you take off the steering wheel
Then the indicator stuff comes out with a couple of screws
Then you drop the column from the body with 2 hex bolts
There is a bolt/hex underneath that locks the ignition barrel onto the shaft
Loosen that and it should pull off.

You should then be able to put the steering wheel back on
