UHF Radio's???
Andy - February 10th, 2004 at 12:46 AM

Some questions from a complete novice :(
Just fitting a UHF radio (all cheap parts) to Andy. The ARIAL comes with two options 6Db or 9Db.
The manual on the radio makes no mention on which one it requires, or which one is best to use.
And idea's??
Thanks,
Andy :thumb

andy, being an ex interstater i'll try and help you out. the db is decibells ie 9 gives you further rnge than 6 but just remember that using the 9 all the time will give you distance but blow everyone away at close range. Personally I would stick with the 6 around towns and on the freeway use the 9 you would find that a little bit better. I'm using a 6 on the 4by and with my 9 can talk to my cousin in ipswich from my driveway. Hope that helps you.

Cool,
thanks heaps Graham.
So I should take both when traveling and swap as required.
It will mainly be for emergencies for me, and the extra distance may be an advantage at times.
At least I know what they're for now.

is it a gme arial or the one that has the big long metal base

Andy - February 10th, 2004 at 10:59 AM

Yep, GME one. Cheapest I could find (as was the Uniden radio)
6Db is one SS rod, 9Db has 2xSS rods.

as being a uhf user myself 1 GME in the 4wd and an old phillips home base setup.Graham is right on the money 6db local 9db more for distance but you can just use 9db and leave it on as you can still talk to a car right next to you with no probs.Prices vary as to what features you want but still they are a good thing when travelling in convoy or solo to keep up with road conditons etc.Just beware there is still a few idiots out on the airwaves.

Thanks guy's.

I paid $300 for the radio (UH-088) and $85 for arial. As I'm a novice no idea if that's good or bad. As I'm traveling soon, just thought I better get one.

Graham, I haven't heard back from the guy after the beetle seat, so it's still there.
I will still bring my curtins over (still being made) to get a VW logo sown in and can bring the seat then :thumb

:thumb I can pick them up if you want Have to go to 17 mile rocks on Saturday and pick up a Kombi I scored from a mate of mine 71 deluxe free.a few I stopped driving interstate 3 yrs ago and still talk to a lot of drivers I know and they reckon that there are more tossers anoying people now that before but andy will find out I'm sure. If your using an extention speaker run it through a switch to turn it off as my wife hates the very colourful language that will start once an argument starts that will go on forever.
