Just wondering how many miles/Kms someone has had on an original VW motor, without pulling apart the bottom end ???
I have just purchased a 2 owner (same family) 1968 beetle with 192000miles/307000km on the motor.
How do I know?
It came with the complete service history from when it left the showroom to its last service in Aug 03. Everything that has been replaced or done on
the car has been recorded !!
Its a good read
so many points have been replaced
.
It had new pistons and barrels at 110k miles and new heads at 156k miles, but the bottom end has never been touched !!!
So what is the highest miles (without case split) anybody has seen on a VW motor ??
I think You may have the record....
Oil quality & oil changes are the main factor I believe... I wonder why they didn't do everything at 110k.. I would have....
Are You thinking of pulling the engine down and looking at the bottom end??
again... I would...

Our bettle ('73L, 1600TP) had factory servicing to 80,000km when I took over. Has done over 150,000km and other than the usual oil leaks is going
strong. Uses no oil and has good compression/leak down. I have replaced the original clutch, brake pads, fuel pump and regulator!
Previous servicing had included struts and tail pipes and horn
I recon I'll beat you on the P/C, but no idea on the rest.
I have chatted with a number of US guy's who have owned type 4 motored Kombi's since new and there are quite a few who did over 300,000
miles without ever pulling the motor, only regular servicing.

I think I will leave the bottom end alone. It has no funny noises and has minimal end float.:thumb
Would be good to rebuild though, it has everything still on it, even the thermostat and flaps in the fan housing. Has the little aluminum tag on the
carbie etc etc......l
I should add up how many points, plugs, exhausts etc that have been used to keep it going.
Servicing Has been every 3000miles since new !!!
120,000miles on mine never been split,at 120.000 put good 2nds P+Cs on + recoed heads,dudes.P.S im the 2nd owner,67 beetle.:o
The engine in my fastie was rebuilt over ten years ago when my father inlaw was using it as is work car. he retired 5 years ago and gave us the car
drive it for 4 years until rust took over , since put engine in our fastie and still going strong.
gotta luv the flat 4

about 20 yrs ago I recall reading a US mag (dune buggies and Hot VW) I think and a feature article was a million mile beetle, one owner. He had it
fully documented, every cent from new (early 50's) the bloke was getting on in years and I seem to recall he sold to either a vw dealer in US or
to VW themselves...He had even recorded fuel purchases and ran a progressive fuel usage data. I think this is the one that toured alaska and central
america also... Some German guy
