Has anyone in NSW been defected for Engine Lid - stand offs.
68AutoBug - February 16th, 2004 at 05:28 PM

I read when someone had been defected for having engine lid stand offs (hood jax) in WA.. Any one in NSW or other states been defected for Engine Lid stand offs..?
I was going to run them in the summer...
I can't see any legality problems with using them.. apart from they aren't standard VW accessories.....
[they could have been - couldn't they?]

That was me that got the defect notice! And also for the chrome eyelids too. I was told that 'kids could get their hands caught in it when I stopped. The eyelids were a pedestrian hazzard apparently
I must say though that the bug does attract negative attention...matt black, dumped, no bumpers, no front number plate, no seat belts....
I never once was pulled over in my oval which was a 'nostalgia resto'.

Craig Torrens - February 16th, 2004 at 09:44 PM

HOODJAX have an RTA approval letter in NSW.

VDUBXTC - February 16th, 2004 at 11:24 PM

I have been defected here in Newcastle.
they said the reason for the defect was that the gap was to large and people could put ther hands inside the engine bay.
They said i could keep the jax on but i would have to mesh the gap for me to pass the blue slip for the notice:mad:

68AutoBug - February 16th, 2004 at 11:34 PM

I didn't really want to hear that Jason, so close too... as I do go to Newcastle every now & then.... Were You pulled up just for that, or was it when You got a pink or blue slip?? Police or RTA ??
There are a couple of beetles up this way with them on.... Some of these Police are too smart... just a money raising thing...
Why in the world would anyone put their hands down there???? Maybe We need mini jax.. to only open 50mm to stop people putting their hands in there!!!!

VDUBXTC - February 16th, 2004 at 11:44 PM

They blocked one lane heading into town on hunter street.
They had police, RTA and EPA doing their thing.
I think they were just having a bad day.
A friend was behind me in his Genuine HSV Walkinshaw. he was defected for his wheels, hole in the bonnet and not displaying the front number plate at the correct hieght.
The funny thing was that the car was in factory condition as it was bought from HSV.
so with that i think they were just out there to piss people off. Wankers:mad::D

Must depend on the mood of the copper.

The baja,s & buggies have the engine exposed.
Some have a cover on the fan belt only, others like the one I ran just had a "cage" over the engine with a piece of weldmesh to protect fingers from the belt. Both quite legal.

But did this cop tell you why anyone on their right mind would want to stick their arm in you engine bay???

VDUBXTC - February 17th, 2004 at 12:41 PM

Na, But i also got done for the T-Bars.
They are a trip hazzard to someone walking past:mad:

Cops can defect u even if u drive a standard car straight from the show room!

Once i had this cop try and defect me cos he was a jelous punk as I was in my Audi i was stopped for a breath test and he looks at my wheels and goes they are a bit big (18" rims) and A3 turbo come with 16" wheels stock i say 'no they are not!' he goes 'wheres ur tyre placard? i played dumb to where the tyre placard is as audis are the only cars with the tyre placard in the fuel tank and i knew cops are dumb so he kept looking everywhere for the tyre placard me and my mate were holding in our laughter then he calls his seargent to find the 'damn tyre placard' Seargent sees written on my engine 5V Turbo asks me 'is this an S3 ?'and i said 'yes it is officer' (S3 comes stock with 17" rims) so then his seargent said his right to have 18" wheels

Then the officer wanted to defect me cos i didnt know where the tyre placard but the seargent told him to let me go as i was holding up the queue for the brethe test :beer

dubnut lighten up a lil bit,

there are cops that are out there just try to big note themselves and defect for the tinest lil thing. Granted this isnt all cops and there are some really decent ones out and about. But if some one is going to say something about a dumb cop that happened to them, let them, if you dont like the crap you read on the forum, dont read

68AutoBug - February 17th, 2004 at 09:05 PM

the common garden variety Police in the country don't even look at cars unless they are doing something stupid & illegal on the road....
The Highway Patrol... Now these dudes are Different... out there to gain revenue , and do whatever they can to anyone who drives a Car..... they are the Mongrels of the police force....
If a car is unroadworthy... due to mechanical faults ... and it could be dangerous.. OK... but different size wheel diameters, wider wheels , an inch or 2 etc.. & Hood Jax .. that is just revenue raising... If We all drove stock standard cars in good condition, they would probably lower the speed limits everywhere, so they could book some one.
Actually, Just out of Scone on the New England Highway, going south - with an overtaking lane has just been changed from 100K to 60k.. and the Highway patrols have made a killing... Its very difficult to overtake anyone at 60kmh

VWCOOL - February 17th, 2004 at 09:17 PM

yeah, go easy on the cops. Some cops are a**holes - the NSWP draws recruits from the community it represents - and so are some VW drivers. Some cops are good friends of forum members here and love cars as much as anyone here. As Craig Torrens said, Hoodjaxs got an okay letter from the NSW RTA when they were first developed. They are removable. But if you are 'doin the 'tude' in your lowered, loud bug, of course a smartarz cop is gunna give you a hard time. As for getting your hand in to the engine bay, well, I can reach the fanbelt of my Holdens with my hands, too, if I try hard enough... I'd love to see that stand up in court!!

Hi

Speaking about defects, I was talking to a bloke the other who went down to the Summernats, he got defected in his Mazda 323 panel van, turbo rotary with a screamer wastegate, non stock air cleaner & blow off valve.

His freind with him had modified car on a trailer with no plates, they checked the VIN on the car, fined and defected him for having no plates and various other things, defected the trailer for a broken tail light & defected the stock tow car for being to low with the trailer on. They may have got out of it if they had came from Redfern;)

Hi

I have an idea for the standoffs, why not fit a servo so that the lid drops almost all the way down when the car is stopped, it cant go all the way because of the lip and then pops back out when running.

Buggyboy - February 17th, 2004 at 09:32 PM

Nah, I think that dubnut has nailed it...

I know that my buggy may not be totally legal if you were to follow the letter of the law, but if I was to get ticketted, then I would wear it- not blame the world..

It would be nice if people could be a bit more responsible with their comments, sure have fun and share a laugh, but save your other stories for your little lunch recess.. as this forum does have some useful information that gets tarnished by some stupid comments of a few..

XXX-1.8T - February 17th, 2004 at 09:44 PM

Dubnut take a chill pill i didnt say all cops are bad

Ive been pulled over 4 times by cops and let off all cos they like the look of my car

Im not a trouble maker anything but this ONE cop had it in for me:vader

Take it easy Dave:beer

Yeah, nice idea. Tried mucking around with that... Mazda RX-7/MX5 healdight motors. The lip on the bonnet stuffs the idea. And paying a grand or more for me to re-engineer the rear of the car - welding, painting etc etc is not something that many people could be bothered with...

68AutoBug - February 17th, 2004 at 09:48 PM

I thought that someone was going to do that Steve, I can't remember whether it was on Here or on the Super Beetles Forum... I think they were using little air Rams... What do PORSCHE use on their 911s where the air scoop rises up when it goes over 60-70 kms ??
What about an extra long choke cable, and pull it closed?? only joking!!

Craig Torrens - February 17th, 2004 at 09:50 PM

you could also fit a popular 80's style whale tail. :P

VWCOOL - February 17th, 2004 at 09:52 PM

and cruise around drinking West Coast Coolers with your WHAM and Duran Duran cassettes playing thru your five-band, graphic equaliser stereo:kiss
