Simon
Selling new VW range or just selling n doing mechanical services ???
Or still recognised by the new VW reshigm?? (spell)
I don't believe there are any Simon. when the Aust made Golf died.. So did most of the VW dealerships..Maybe PORSCHE dealerships were luckier.. I have noticed that many old dealerships in Sydney have changed brands. Now You have "Scuderia Veloce JEEP " .. :o most changed to japanese Vehicles. like SUBARU - Nissan etc.
I would say the place at Gosford... carnt remember its name but i think there been around for quite a while.
I don't know about the other states Simon, as I'm not familiar with their geography.
However in NSW, there is one still existing dealer that was around prior to 1968. That is Jupiter Motors at Wagga Wagga. They are listed in my 1964
dealer booklet, and they are still listed on the VWA site today as a current franchise. No doubt they sell other marques too otherwise they would have
gone bust many years ago like all the others.
I've never been to Wagga, but I do know the dealership has an immaculate low-mileage purple Superbug on display. It was featured in one of the
glossy magazines a few years ago. I must visit one of these days.
The last pre-'68 Sydney dealer to survive was McCallum Motors at Strathfield, but they went bust in 1984 and the site became a Mercedes dealer
for a few years. Until recently it was a Goodyear tyre centre, but its now being demolished for, I suspect, extensions to the motorway end at
Strathfield.
I once documented the fate of all the early Sydney dealers in our VW club magazine, so I must get to and update it. I will post a list of all the 1964
dealers (VW's top year in Australia) and people can see whether their town's dealer is still existing. I think not for 99.9% of them.
Doesn't surprise me about VW Australia's lack of knowledge of local VW history. Until a few weeks ago, the official website said that
Australians had been buying VWs for 65 years (!) We set them straight on that one. When I visited a Sydney dealership recently, driving my
sister's '74 Passat, the salesman didn't even know it was a Volkswagen, let alone what model.
Actually I forgot to mention that McCallum Motors survived past 1984, but as a Mercedes franchise rather than VW. They moved to Sylvania and sold
Mercedes until the mid 1990s.
I also forgot Lanock Motors, which survived on their Camperdown site until 1991. Their St Leonards yard also shut down that year. They are now Toyota
and Holden dealers.
How are you going Phil?
Mabey I haven't been paying attention or somthing but I haven't read any posts from you for a while. Perhaps we just hang out in different
sections. Anyhow, look forward to catching up again soon somwhere thats not as hectic as the All VW Forum was.
I'm surprised to hear that Lanock motors is still trading..... and I Must go to that VW dealership in Wagga Wagga when My 68AutoBug is on the
road... I wonder if they still have any NOS VW Beetle parts??
I wonder what happened to all those large round blue & white VW signs.. I saw one in a Movie today [in Europe] ... on Pay TV Austar .. thats what
You need Adz.
But You would never finish Your Cars...
:o ... and Never go to Bed... :o
it is great when the temp goes over 35+C ..
Hi Bronze,
Nice to know I'm missed. Just haven't been online much recently, been too busy working on my Kombi. Been remaking all the Campmobile
cupboards and fitting it out. Next I need to make the curtains - which means learning how to use a sewing machine.
Haven't even been to any VW club runs or meetings for months - will try to fix that in the new year.
Sorry Les, I meant to clarify that Lanock Motors AREN'T still trading. Their Camperdown and St Leonards yards closed down in 1991 when City Ford
bought the Lanocks company and liquidated it. I went to the Lanocks farewell dinner in 1991.
Camperdown is now City Toyota and St leonards is now Hunter Holden.
I still have the original Lennox Parramatta number plate surround!
