Identify the year of this Split Kombi
type_one - March 14th, 2004 at 05:22 PM

Was thinking of selling this but my old man has convinced me to keep it. I have no idea what year it is and would like your help. I have got a number out of the engine bay from the back fire wall under the petrol tank on the left that reads something like VWK5868 or might be VWK5808. Not sure if this is a chassis number or not. I have a feeling it is not. Where do I find the chassis number on this beast? Also she is a lot worse underneath than she first looks. She is a semphore model and single brakes lights on the back. I am thinking around 58 as rego number was DCR006. Had a 56 beetle that was a 56 oval on rego BCR323. Does logic assume that 57 started with C and then 58 with D? Do have some other shots if they help. Thanks in advance to anyone that helps.

I'm going with a 58-59. Does it have a centre brake light?

I'd say it's a 56-58 the plates are not original as they have premier state stmped on them. the single tail light and lack of bullet indicators on the front suggest 56-58

Maybe ya right Silver.. Regardless, keeper!!!

The only way to check is look in the engine bay and the chassis number is on the right just below the fuel tank.
As she is an early girl it wont have a plate near the seat.

Get that number and I can date it for you.
it will be between 55 - 57 if it has a centre brake light.
Cheers

Jason,

The fact it has a peak over the front windscreens leads me to believe its not an early 50's model. My 65 splitty has the chassis number on the right hand side of the engine bay just next to the spot where the rear valance mounts up.

Good luck with the resto

Cheers

Steve

P.S Your not missing much behind you with those rear view mirrors!!! :)

I agree with you all 'it's a keeper"

Thanks guys. I will try and find the chassis number now that I have a vague idea where to look. Any ideas on what the other number I got off it might be. It looks very official and all. As for centre mount brake light there is not one. Is the centre brake light make it older or newer?

A for the mirrors Matara they are very hip aren't they? Surely they are worth heaps and worthy of a rarest of the rare mention. NOT. They are bloody ugly things. I think if and when I ever get around to this baby it will be a long and hard resto. There is heaps of rust under it. Hey Rob (robnjo) it is heaps worse than the one you got off me. Guess it has the rarity factor though. I may have to learn how to use a welder.

The center brake light fits in the engine lid, if not fitted and the engine lid is the original it would male it a 58-60 as 61 didnt have semaphores.
All splits before had center brake lights.

Cheers
Dave
