I love coppers

I have a stupid 40K school zone that I have to drive through on the way to my daughters school. Its normally a 3 lane 80 zone. I dont reckon it should be a school zone cos it is a snotty private school along some religious or ethnic line, and I have NEVER seen a kid on foot near there, but rules are rules.

And rules, especially stupid ones, are meant to be broken, so I just cruised through at 80. Pulled up at my daughters school... and so did a cop car behind me. 75 in a 40 zone. I got a lecture, told I was good and did 40 in this school zone and should have done so in the other one. Asked a few questions about my driving record (clean for 10 years) and I was let off with a warning.

Cool huh. Glad I dont live in Victoria else I would be facing firing squad by now.

Most people would be amazed that there are police out there that do use their discretion.

What about the 40km/h zone on the pacific highway between Kempsey and Macksville. For 1.5 hrs in the morning, and 1.5hrs in the arvo, all the highway traffic (including 40 + tonne semi trailers) have to slow down from 100 to 40 for about 400m. AND NOT ONE SCHOOL STUDENT EVER CROSSES THE HIGHWAY AT THE SCHOOL!!!!!

THERE ARE NO PEDESTRIAN STUDENTS AROUND THE HIGHWAY, BUT EVERY VEHICLE STILL HAS TO SLOW DOWN.

The Coppers can be bad around my way. They will pull you over for doing 3 ks over the limit but they will ignore people who can't drive in a straight line, hog the right hand lane, talk on their mobile phone, don't give way and run red lights ..... although I must admit I did get let off one morning after driving home from Night Duty ( I am a Nurse ) doing 75 in a 60 zone. It seems that Coppers like Nurses !!!!!!!

MickH - March 24th, 2004 at 01:39 PM

Just slow down for the school zones no matter what. picture your kid walking out in front of a car doing 60 in a 40 zone. Being a private school should make no difference. One of my best friends when I was in grade 3 was hit by a speeding car and run over. I still remember him going under the front and out the back. These zones are there for a reason. The cop should have thrown the book at ya.:cussing

KruizinKombi - March 24th, 2004 at 02:33 PM

Well Chris, that explains how you have a clean driving record; they keep letting you off!!! :P

ducky - March 24th, 2004 at 02:42 PM

As a ex teacher of ten years I say run them down!!!!!

vwguru - March 24th, 2004 at 07:18 PM

SPEED DOESNT KILL, STUPIDITY DOES. LET THE STUPID DIE.

tonyg - March 25th, 2004 at 05:23 AM

Went to Sydney recently.. big town! but speed changes every few hundred metres on highway 1 really suck... Are they for road safety or just to confuse drivers, hence raise revenue?

My wife wasnt so lucky this morning down here in Melbourne. Got done for doing 48 in a 40 zone at 9:30 in the morning after all the kids were in class.

$200. Bummer.

byronbus - March 25th, 2004 at 12:28 PM

Speed zones around schools save lives, cops wont book you if you're not a criminal and dont break the law, amazer should have been booked, infact I think he's full of shit, cops wouldnt let someone off doing 35 ks over, either that or the cops down wollongong way are bloody corrupt and should be exposed, amazer wouldnt be laughing if i ran his precious little daughter down doing 35 over the limit...so grow up and obey the law, stop teaching you're daughter to grow up as a selfish little lawbreaker!!!

Anthiron - March 25th, 2004 at 12:42 PM

im with judy and mick.........school zones are there for a reason....dont abuse them.....ive never seen a kid be run over but imagine being run over at 10 years old and being killed.......not a great life........dont be an idiot do the speed limit...expescially in school zones...and u are hypacritical......u slowed down for your daughters school but not the private school......dont be stupid they are all children...it doesnt matter whether some are well off and go to a private school and some go to public schools.......i bet u would change your tune if a student walked out in front of you tomorow and u killed them:cussing

You can believe I am full of shit if you want.

The thing is that I have as much chance of hitting a tasmanian tiger as I have a kid from this school. You cannot hit something that doesnt exist. I couldnt hit a child here if I tried, because there arent any.

The problem we have in this country (world) is that too many people walk around like sheep believing what they are preached day in day out. These laws are made by a bunch of bored people sitting in Macquarie St just hanging around until they qualify for their million dollar pensions. They make a blanket rule that any road passing by a school is going to be a school zone. On the face of it, sounds good. But what we have done is assume that all roads and schools are the same when quite obviously its a load of rubbish. 500 metres from my house is a school. Its not on the 6 lane main road but one road back. All day every day people are driving along this 70kmh road at 80kmh. Kids are getting knocked down there at a scarey rate. I know of 3 in the last year, 1 fatal. The kids have to cross the road to get to this school but there is no 40 km zone DESPITE the fact that kids are being injured and killed every year. NO kids from Sule College walk to and from school. NO kids cross the road. Its only a swamp on the other side, why would they. Next door is a sewage treatment plant. I am totally in favour of school speed zones and will slow down HAPPILY for them all, apart from this one. Usually I do slow down and grumble at the stupidity but this day I was late.

There seems to be another stupid rule coming into effect here. There is no parking on the school side of a street. FORCING kids to cross a road. Insane.

I also wish there was a speed camera in my street. I wish there were a few in my council area. But there isnt any. Not enough traffic. I know of 5 fatal accidents obviously as a result of too much speed in the last couple of years. 1 of them related to me. 3 of them on the same corner. I know of 4 speed cameras in Wollongong. Two of them I agree with as they are IN A SCHOOL ZONE the other 2 on the freeway where there arent any accidents are a joke. Why arent they at the black spots?

What kills people on our roads is simple. People who cant drive. Once every few weeks I read stories of elderly drivers driving into swimming pools, shops, fences cos they put it in the wrong gear or hit the wrong pedal. They arent fit to drive and shouldnt be allowed to. One hit a group of kids waiting outside shops last week. Young people who have too much bravado and not enough common sense. People who point blank refuse to keep left. People who cant keep there car between the lines on the road. Go to your shopping centre and ount how many people cant park their car between the lines. People who refuse to pull in behind a kombi but will speed up, cut in front causing me to hit the brakes. Happens all the time.

What other laws are there made for sheep like yourselves. How about water restrictions banning the use of a hose to wash your car. You can throw 4000 buckets on your car but cant rinse of with a hose. The council is using treated drinking water to damp down construction sites to stop dust despite there being a whole ocean full and lake full of salt water but I cant wash my kombi!!!

Of course there was the Afghanistan thing where we saved the world from terrorism and the Iraq thing where we got that oil back of the frenchies, oops I mean we picked up all the WMD and freed the people of both countries and made them all happy while we sit back and watch Israel take over Palestine ignoring the blue line that WE made up and call palestinians terrorists for fighting back.

Or we have laws that say people convicted of violent crimes can walk the streets on behaviour bonds, some more serious ones are locked up for 18 months or so, yet people like Paulin Hanson, Renee Rivkin get locked up cos Pauline may have bodged a bit of paperwork, and Renee took advantage of a little seecret and bought some shares.

In the land and environment courts you will see people being ordered to pull down non approved garden sheds while developers are allowed to do whatever they want and claim ignorance even if it is how they make a living.

I believe that road rules are made for the lowest common denominator and dont put myself in that category. I broke the law. Absolutely. But its a stupid law when it has no effect on anything but piss people off.

Mabye you shoudl move up, here at least with common sense when it comes to this sort of thing, my local school is on a major road with 70km/hr limit, there is no school zone and minimal aprking so as to limit the amount of kids inj this area. Traffic lighst are in place to allow kids to cross the 5 lanes. Parents are advised (an almost all do) pick there kids up from the otehr side of the school which does have school zones.

Cruzin in a Golf - March 25th, 2004 at 07:52 PM

I can just start to feel the heat of all this someone is going to be :( or :cry or:cussing. my 2c? slow down, going fast might be fun and slowing down annoying, but i would rather live without the guilt. Just because you think it is safe one day doesnt mean road conditions stay the same. What if a kid did walk out on the road, better to be doing 40k than 80k yeah? thats why the speed limit is there, in reality we should be going 5kmh everywhere that would stop all the problems (i cant see anyone dying from that speed, if someone wants to challenge me go for it!!) but we have the privilege of going faster, so if you abuse it cop it.

Bootman - March 25th, 2004 at 08:15 PM

VW is for Cruisin' -- V6 Alfa is for Fanging, but only on country roads where youcan let things really hang out! (well mostly)

Driving fast in the city is absolutely pointless, there is always some twit in the right lane slowing everybody down. I slow down for school zones. Don't get conned into the we all must drive slow routine, speeding is a crime. Speeding isn't a crime, even if the Government tries to portray it as one.

People who pulling in front of Trucks, Buses, Kombis and other larger vehicles in their stupid Korean or Japanese tin cans, forcing the larger vehicle to hit the anchors ina crash stop scenario should have their licenses revoked on the spot for dangerous driving. This happens to me all the time when I'm driving the Kombi. I need a big bar and I will go through the bloody twits.

Parking lots, the ladies drive around these like they drive the shopping trolleys inside. Beware the middle aged lady chasing a bargain with a shopping trolley, also beware the massed female shoppers with kids in tow. You will be run down, barged into, knocked out of the way...etc.. If you think the roads are dangerous, try the shopping Malls.

Having also had a friend killed in a school crossing incident, he ran from behind a bus. It was his own fault. but the image remains. The real problem with school zones is the lazy parents who sit in the car on the other side of the street, who wont get out and pick their kids up or drop them off onthe correct side of the street for the school. It isn't the kids fault, it is the parents. Appropraiate blame where it really belongs, not to the driver but to the parent who doesn't care enough about their child to park the car, even if it is a block away and walk them to the school.

Also we should ban the big Urban 4wd being driven by Mum who can't park the vehicle, has barely any control of the car when going down narrow streets and puts the kids downn the Bus zone or a no stopping zone. they should all be driving Kombi's anyway!

low55 - March 25th, 2004 at 08:27 PM

slow downnnnn i was on my way to work yesterday and a car was heading towards me in the other lane just be for she aproched me she verd head on in to my truck she broke both legs killed her mother and cant remember a thing about it she was doing 80 kays and i was doing 30 kays i see it ever day in a truck i spend 10 hours a day on the road a wankers in cars speeding and hitting each other when will yous lern eg: amazer laws are there for a reson sorry to be so blunt but this is going to efect me for a long time and it rote my truck off i hope i havent afended any won by this post but slow down

Yeah well they mightn't be able to control them either. he he

Well i think the government is going about the speed problem the wrong way with the school zones. Some zones have timeframes on them others dont, they should get rid of the timeframed ones anyway too much looking at your watch rubbish going on. Secondly are we slowing down for just the kids or their parents or anyone picking up the children, which means we also slow down for people like us too. The blame for anything that might happen is placed on all people. The police should fine kids that dont cross in the right place etc. Too much emphasis goes on drivers going too fast. It is more about understanding the conditions as a driver. For instance a stretch of road is a 60kmh limit until it goes past a school where it is 40kmh after the school returning to 60kmh. At 10pm is there going to be a child out on the road or anyone? So naturally you wouldnt even cross your mind to slow down if it was completely 60kmh all the way through. Now that is fair enough i would think, but what i dont understand is when people drive well above the posted limit at a time when it is more likely for children, parents whoever to be there, that is just bad driving. This was the point i was trying to make before. Licensing needs to be given a kick in the butt, before the road toll goes dramatically down. Remember drive to the road conditions not your own made up conditions of like "i am late!", i am glad when i get stuck behind a slow car it reminds me to be patient too many times it is what triggers people to be impatient and destroy lives.

amazer - March 26th, 2004 at 08:56 AM

This forum is too full of bitchy people looking out to flame people.

The fact the school is private isnt the reason I did 80. The reason is that no kid walks, they all get lifts in mum and dads merc or BMW (the poorer ones drive hondas) and if they arent getting a lift with their parents they are on the school owned bus.

I will cop a fine for exceeding the speed limit near any other school sweet. Not that I would do that. I would have copped it this time too cos I know it was against the law. But in THIS case it is a stupid law.

Same as the blanket 50km residential speed limit. My street is residential but it is 60km because it is a back street link between warilla and mt warrigal. This is despite the fact that my street is narrow and windy. Others around me are almost 4 lanes and straight yet are 50 zones. Dont believe me? come and check it out. Will give you a tour.

Latest accident here last week was when a man swerved to avoid a dog and had a head on. The woman driving the other car is in a serious condition in hospital. Root cause not speed but stupid people letting dogs roam streets, stupid licensing system letting people without defensive driving skills onto the road.

All I wanted to say is that some police ARE reasonable and DO use discretion. Everyone take a PROZAC and have a good day.

byronbus - March 26th, 2004 at 10:36 AM

As i was saying, whether its stupid or not its the law, obey it and stop teaching you're daughter to do whatever she wants. Makes my job as a teacher harder and I hate having to teach students that their parents are misguided and wrong. ::thumb

Cruzin in a Golf - March 26th, 2004 at 11:22 AM

If you have to justify your actions then you know you are wrong simple as that, and everyone does it so i wouldnt put the blame on one single person.

lobus - March 26th, 2004 at 11:23 AM

Cops let you off cause you are nice bloke and they have the same opinions of the law as you I suppose....What a load of:repuke
