hmmm I got a mp3 player but its a Creative Zen....it comes with software that allows you to rip cd's [part of the post deleted due to promotingillegal conduct] I don't know if the ipod comes with software that does that but its a good way to get mp3s :) I didn't think itunes was available to Australia yet but if it is I wouldn't mind using it...

[part of the post deleted due to promoting illegal conduct]

so far no Aussies have been sued for stealing music but be aware that it may happen in the future...

Hey Guys - can you do this over U2U please! The forum doesn't
need any stress about this stuff, so keep it kinda quiet. Not that
you have to be too paranoid, but be careful.

Sorry, I just saw a user group get into trouble for recommending
cracks in Germany. I wouldn't want to see a VW forum in trouble
over music.

Not at all. You can make mp3s from your own CDs. I can't say for sure it's not illegal but it seems to be reasonable so I don't worry about it.

Most of my mp3s are copied from my CDs which then just sit in my CD rack coming out only occasionally.

Bizarre - April 24th, 2004 at 08:07 PM

can i ask what programme you use for that Andrew???

Anthiron - April 24th, 2004 at 08:17 PM

as long as u do not distribute the music then copying music from a cd u have bought is not illegal

BenettonVW - April 24th, 2004 at 08:36 PM

vwombat - I appreciate the concern, but my opinion is there is a fair difference between MP3's and serials/ cracks for pirated software.. As I said, I still appreciate the concern.

MP3's are getting harder to find.

I have had a mp3 player for a few years now, as my folks got one for me in Singapore. Mine is a Samsung Baby Yepp, and at the time - dunno how good it is now, but it was good then, having 64meg and so on..

OK - another question

Do you guys/gals with em still use em???

Or do you just use you CD players????

The iPod i am looking at is like 15Gig!!
Should be able to store a few songs there.

I am thinking of waiting for the iPod Mini which is like 1.5Gig (i think - 1,000 songs instead of 10,000) but the US market has delayed things.
From first reports it doesnt seem to be any cheaper - may be just smaller.

the iPod 15Gig seems good value @ $400.

Anyone have an opinion???

TTFN

Barry

Anthiron - April 24th, 2004 at 08:47 PM

400 is fair for a good player

[part-post deleted due to promoting illegal conduct]

BenettonVW - April 24th, 2004 at 09:03 PM

Yeah, sounds fantastic for $400.

The best thing to do about all this downloading and stuff is do what I do mate.. Suck it and see..

Of course, I only speak for myself and it is my opinion.

The Napster player has a 20 gig hard drive and is around the same price. There should be a review on CNET.com somewhere.......

MickH - April 24th, 2004 at 09:35 PM

see if this works.....

Bizarre - April 24th, 2004 at 09:41 PM

Hmmm.... give the iPod a pretty good score.

Anyone seen or know where i could look at a Rio Karma????

they seem interesting (read cheap.... sorry - good value!)

Cruzin in a Golf - April 24th, 2004 at 09:45 PM

i have been using audiograbber and audiocatalyst to do the ripping, and i only rip my own cds so i can play them on my computer without having to change cds etc...i used to download mp3s but i got rid of them conscience got the better of me, and i dont want to get caught with it all...there will law suits soon i am sure.

Canni. - April 24th, 2004 at 09:51 PM

I wouldn't wait for the ipod mini...seems you get less for more money...ur basically just paying for the small size...and don't listen to the advertising...don't take your hard disk mp3 player jogging or any rough activities like skiing...

you might want to check out the Creative players for good value... (well mine was when I got it)

And yeah they are worth it...I use mine all the time now (its a 20GIG ) ...its so good not to have to keep changing cd's...and the battery life is far better than my cd player

BenettonVW - April 24th, 2004 at 10:17 PM

I think you'll find the Napster one only works for US residents only.. At least the new Napster program is US only. I am thinking they work hand in hand, but maybe not.

Sorry about the delay in replying. A couple of people have suggested ripping programs. The one I use is dbPowerAmp music converter ( http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ ). It works quite reliably but is probably less intuitive than some of the others mentioned since you need to grab a second program which will do the CD input. It's completely free and supports a large number of formats.

As for the iPod mini, it's 4 gig and can be bought from the Apple site in the US for only $50 less than the 15 gig iPod. If you knew you'd never go over 4 gig, it might be worth it, but I'd go for the full iPod just to give room to expand. Australian pricing might be different though.
