kombi heaven! (sorry bit of a story)
vdub2c - December 10th, 2002 at 02:08 PM

Hey Guys and Gals,
Some of prolly already know, i went up the coast for a week to byron/brisbane..
Firstly i'd like to say it was unreal and next year it will be a bug cruise starting from sydney, heading up to brisbane... anyone is welcome, at the moment it's just me and my mate.

anyways back to it.. Byron was unreal, such a chilled environment, just what i needed to take my mind off alot of things.
sooo many kombis it was hard checking out every single one! it's easy in sydney, there's 1 or 2 every 30 mins of cruising.. up there, it's 30 every 1 or 2 mins of cruising! UNREAL!!! Saw a few original looking KG's, a nice old original THING! heaps of type 3's but suprisingly only 5 bugs on the whole holiday - quite disappointing, we'll all have to cruise up and change that!

was walking down the street and saw a red kombi, nice condition just parked illegally, engine still running... what caught my eye (besides the fact that it was a VW) was a aussieveedubbers.com sticker on the back. i took a chance and walked up to the window...
"just noticed the sticker.. i'm a big fan of that site... what's your nickname on it?" he introduced himself as MelbourneCairnsCruiser! uncanny that i met the dude in byron... actually that i met the guy at all! Stopped and had a chat for a while, trying to comprehend the odds! talked for a while and i wished him a safe journey... so hope you're doin' ok buddy! :thumb

anyways enough of my boring holiday, just thought i'd share some of the experience... hopefully next year, there'll be alot more bugs cruising up from melbourne/sydney and we can make a weekend/ week of it, great place for cruises, camping out, and generally having a good relaxed time!

Thanks for listening/sorry to bore!!
Yianni. :bounce

p.s: will rustle up some photos and post em here if anyone's interested.

Yianni

i did a similar post a while back. We were up there for the last school holidays. Your right - bloody kombis everywhere. We counted 100 different ones in under seven days. Thats like 15 different ones every day.
At the time my kombi wasnt ready and this was just upsetting the missus and annoying the kids. Daisy is with us now - they are happy!

We came across a grave yard though. On the road from Condong to Cabarita Beach was a farm with heaps of dead ones!.
Some one answered and new whose place it was.

"upsetting the missus and annoying the kids"

That's exacty how i felt because i didn't have my bug up there... But yeah, HEAPS of kombis and as you said, all different everyday...

one quick observation... With so may "vw"s up there... there isn't really a place that specialises in vw repairs... me and my mate wanna start up a shop up there.. "Hippie VeeDub Repairs" was just a drunken idea we had ;)

That was Jonathan the German tourist you met with sticker on the back. (I put it on) he is somewhere just north of Sydney today. He is leaving Melbourne for Germany on 22/12. It is no wonder you noticed his van. It is the prettiest one I have seen for a long time....

Here at Caves Beach must be runner up!
there would be around 20 local bay Kombis in our little swansea/caves beach community

While visiting byron bay a few years back I noticed people stop waving in other vw's as soon as you drive in. I supose that it would be unsafe to drive if you was to wave at all vw's as your hands would hardly touch the wheel

Me and my friend then headed for nimbin for a day where you can see proberly about 4-5 chopped up split buses in the hemp musem (such a shame)!!!!!

Can't remember much else about that day for some reason. :jesus:alien:sandrine

Love Byron,
We go up to Brissy every year and stop at Byron on the way up and back just to hang out for a bit of this and a bit of that....
Yeah.. I think Stokers Siding would be the closest one, but I think its still about 30 mins south of Byron unfortunately. Its funny, you go through the beach carpark and spot all the Kombi's but never get to check out their interior as the curtains are always drawn! Dunno why!

Yeah we stopped at Strop's pub on the way home to meet some friends.
Man .... that is one great pub. Yep the foods a bit dear but i dont mind paying when the food/scenery/service is the best!

yeah love byron definitely worth the 9 hours + drive... such a chilled atmosphere.
if anyone is interested in a cruise up there one weekend me and a mate are heading up just for a night in a few months... his bug will be finished then so we'll drive up to see how reliable she is ;)

Haven't been to Byron yet. Looking forward to going one day. The only thing I have heard of it is word-of-mouth and here on the forum. As a Queensland boy I'm a bit naive of of choice NSW places but I did think it funny when I went to get my Newstart after Uni they said I couldn't go and look for work in Byron Bay - they would suspend any payments immeadiately. Luckly I didn't need any anyhow!

I'm guessing its the place to be to look for work with your mates.

Yeh I am with you guys, Byron would have to be one of the best places on the east coast. I go up there every year for 2 weeks every January just can't get enough. Last year we went ot some markets at a place called The Channon which is past Nimbin up in the hills, there where that many kombis in the packing area I reckon every second hippie has got one. I told the misses that we should buy a kombi just to drive up there for the annual hols. I will take some photos when up there this time
