My Little Rant- The Dub Wave
Lokita - May 13th, 2004 at 10:42 AM

Ok, little rant, little bit of venting, please ignore if you don't wanna hear a lil' grouchiness.

I drove past 6 beetles, 2 kombis and various golfs this morning on my way down King Georges Road.
Guess how many dub waves I got?

None! Nadda! Zip!

What's going on people? Are dubbers losing the love for other dubbers? That wave off a dub really makes my day, and it's a real disappointment when there is no recognition.

So please, if you're driving around Sydney and you see a lil white dub with a loud stereo and an even-louder driver singing along to the music, please, just give a little nod or wave. Please? Pretty pretty please with a cherry on top? :)

Ok, I'm done. Sorry bout the rant. :D

How bout you, are you getting less and less dub waves every day?

Desert Bug - May 13th, 2004 at 11:21 AM

Hi Lokita,
Yeah I've noticed that a few times, but then I realize that I'm driving a Falcon (work car) and not the Splitty or Beetle. We still get the VW wave in the VWs down here pretty much every time.
Cheers, Ian.

Da Wiz - May 13th, 2004 at 11:26 AM

I hope you are waving ... if your waving then there is no excuse for the snobby attitude ... but hey if you don't start it then your no better than them ...

I give thumbs up - even when I am driving the camry :)

Secoh - May 13th, 2004 at 11:41 AM

me too...I guess they are still too common on the roads. I always got waves when driving the Renault 16, Morris 1100 or Mini, and even the Transit van (mind you the transit got waves either from hippies or people wanting to know if I sold ice creams or pot...LOL)

Lokita - May 13th, 2004 at 11:50 AM

I often do the Ali G respeck thing but the oldies don't really get that.

I always got puzzled looks when I waved at dubs while driving my last car. Prolly cause I was in a Corolla.

I just love the dub wave. :D

andrewh - May 13th, 2004 at 12:15 PM

I've also been snubbed by other Dub drivers. Only one guy even seemed to acknowledge that I was driving a VW. I think he was in a Kombi somewhere along Beecroft road, and as we passed each other we both turned to check out each other's cars. At least I was checking out his car, he might have been looking at something else.

Having said that, I tend to offer a flash of my headlights over a wave. It just seems easier and is probably a bit more noticable.

So if anyone sees a white (various shades) Beetle driving around flashing them up, it's my version of the dub wave.

XXX-1.8T - May 13th, 2004 at 12:31 PM

i always dub wave to any aircooled vw

most wave back which i love:party

Lokita - May 13th, 2004 at 01:45 PM

Ok, I'm on a mission to re-awaken the dub wave amongst non-waving-dubbers.

I'm probably starting in the wrong spot but, seeing as how it is pretty likely that people reading this might like vws...possibly...:D

I'm just gonna start waving furiously a beeping and flashing lights and yelling out the window. Surely that's got to get SOME attention! :D

bugger - May 13th, 2004 at 02:10 PM

I have dive both a Kombi and a Beetle and I must say that Kombi drivers are far better at giving a way than their Beetle counterparts.
I think all VW owners should lift their game and give a wave!

Lokita - May 13th, 2004 at 02:15 PM

Exactly! :)

bugboymatt - May 13th, 2004 at 02:27 PM

Yeah true get heaps more waves in the kombi than in my bug !
I wave always. Whan i lived in the uk most people wave and flash there lights ! but alas it is very not so here !!!!
We all share the same love for them, and it makes some peoples day driving around and getting a little wave or flash from others !

buzzbug - May 13th, 2004 at 02:34 PM

I am in an unfortunate position, i have to drive to work along the princess Hway between Ulladulla and Nowra, so i get all the backpackers in kombi campers travelling up and down the coast. Now it is these bastards that irritate me as they (a majority) have no idea about VOLKSWAGENISM.

Many a time does the friendly VW how ya going wave turn in to the up yours you ungratefull poomy (not all) backpacker single finger salute.

All i can think is that the poor kombi is being driven by a non believer, and some deserving young person is missing out on the joys of owning a kombi/VW because of that ungratefull bastard.

Now that is a rant.

killakornkobb - May 13th, 2004 at 03:15 PM

im being snobbed aswell!!!

i got a "WTF?!?!" look from some dude yesterday :|

and some little guy in a blue beetle ignored me altogether today!.. but it hin kwe gotta remember.. some people concerntate on the car infront of them, and may not see all the VW's go past:) i ty to keep an eye out..as i love the dub wave:) my girlfriend finds it amusing... "you dont know them" she says! little does she know!:D

bugger - May 13th, 2004 at 03:25 PM

Crap! if you are that busy driving that you don't notice the other great VeeDubs on the road, then you are driving the wrong car.
I'm always on the scout and know almost all of the dubs around here.
It is the clueless uni students that think it is cool to drive a vw(and not appreciate the experience I might add),that get up my nose. Only last Monday I pulled up next to one in an average looking beetle (it had potential), and infromed them of the interclub run happening here on the June long week end. I thought I would do the right thing and invite them, only to get the weirdest look and an 'O' right thanks' response.
Now that's arrogant.

I'll agree with that. I'm a uni student, but I appreciate the experience of owning a VW. However when I let my friend drive it, he had absolutely no mercy for it and its foibles (okay knackered synchros and dodgy brakes), and sees it as just another car. You can almost see his eyes glaze over when I start to talk (fairly passionately) about it.

Me too. It'd be cool if there were some sort of (opt in) directory of VW owners and where they're from.

Lokita - May 13th, 2004 at 04:59 PM

I keep cruise flyers in my car & every time I see a dub, they get one plastered on their window or thrown through their window.

They WILL appreciate being a dub driver. :D

splitpersonality - May 13th, 2004 at 06:33 PM

gotta wave folks ,gotta uphold a institution.......air cooled only works for me

Dannyboy - May 13th, 2004 at 07:04 PM

Lokita i know the probs , here in the East there seems to be alot of rich kids that have had Daddy buy them a bug and they haven't got a clue but at least they're driving dubs which is better than nothing. I like alot of folk tend to see VW's when in my O'briens Hi-ace van. Having me hanging out the window , waving enthusiasically is not a pretty sight and even when in my 67 very few peoplwe wave back. Here's the trick.
When you see a VW coming raise your hand as though your about to wave , hand open etc so it loks like your waving and if no response pull your sun visor down instead!! Ha ha Try it Lokita , may help

Dan:)

StenGuns - May 13th, 2004 at 08:12 PM

Christ I thought on VW bus drivers waved!!! I have been ignoring all you beetles, karhmans and notches.. Not anymore I say!!..For my penance, I'm going to stand out on the road right now and wave at anything that remotely looks air-cooled!!

Dannyboy - May 13th, 2004 at 08:22 PM

I wave and smile at strangers anyway , just for the doss! Spins me out how many wave back when they haven't got a clue who i am. As you can tell i drive allday and this is just a cheap laugh to get me through the day. Funny though!

Dan:):D:P:thumb

andrewh - May 13th, 2004 at 08:23 PM

So what's the policy with newer dubs like Golfs? Do we wave at them or is the wave reserved only for the aircooled VWs?

lil dub - May 13th, 2004 at 08:24 PM

i hear ya lokita -- it makes me cry too!!!

i NEVER get waves because i am in a TYPE 3 ------ sometimes i wonder if other vw drivers even know that we are in the same family....

am getting better at picking the backpackers/hippies/firstcarowner beetle/kombi drivers. they aren't in it for the vw ---- they don't understand volkswagensim at alll......

i am all for the VW WAVE REVIVAL!!!!!!!!

splittychick - May 13th, 2004 at 08:25 PM

Kombi drivers are definetely prominent wavers.Unless the driver looks about 70 & looks as if they've owned the kombi since new,i always get a wave from all fellow kombi drivers.;)Of course i always wave as well.:D

Peter Leonard - May 13th, 2004 at 09:24 PM

yep. it sucks when the wave is unrequited. but there are several reasons...

1. The Oncoming Dub Driver (ODD) is elderly and can barely see the windscreen wipers, let alone the extremities of the bonnet.

2. The ODD is elderly and has owned the dub for so long that it's just become a means of transport (I know, it's a horrible thought).

3.The ODD is a crotchetty old fart that thinks younguns who drive VW's are hoons or wankers who'd probably steal their false teeth and bonnet badge if they had the chance.

4.The ODD is so new to the dub scene they think they're the only dub on the road, and are shocked to see another version of their unique little vehicle. Look out for the shocked face.

5.Interspecial contact is shunned by a diehard dub purist. no wave from a kombi to a bug or a bug to a type three with these nazis.

6.The ODD is watching a couple of red lights glaring ominously at them from under the speedo.

7.The ODD is above acknowledging the rest of the human race, unless they have passed at least three harrowing trials. one of which involves boiling chip oil and peanut butter.

8. The ODD is legally blind.

9. The ODD has the steering wheel in a vice-like grip of death to keep from losing control of the sloppy front end and ramming into oncoming traffic.

10. The ODD has very poor reflexes, they can be observed waving jovially at a perplexed tarago seven cars behind you, with a glassy smile on their face.

11. They're waiting for you to make the first move.... this can lead to a viciously fought but incredibly swift game of 'wave chicken' where neither party can stand the thought of giving an unreturned wave and waits for the other to initiate, until of course you've already overshot and completely missed your chance. These people often have narrow squinty eyes and are similar to the number 9's in the white knuckle steering grip.

..... ever not waved? becoming jaded? WAVE DAMN YOU!! it's fun. it's kooky. it's elitist :D

silver - May 13th, 2004 at 09:40 PM

To some people, they are only Cars!

Canni. - May 13th, 2004 at 09:48 PM

usually wave cept when I'm driving cause I'm a Learner and kinda need to concentrate on the road...so far most people wave back...does make ur day to see other people enjoying their dubs :)

extensiblecow - May 13th, 2004 at 10:03 PM

I always get lots of waves when I drives past other Beetles along Pittwater Road to work in the morning :D

[usually, I'll spot a while, possiblye 70's, Beetle on my way to work :)]

As I had never driven a VeeDub in my life before, the first time I got a VeeDub wave, I was really puzzled; waving back by reflex and wondering whether I knew the driver of the other car...

Two good friends of mine, who are Beetle enthusiasts, told me it's the norm, and better wave back - so I do wave BIG now, everytime I pass by another Beetle (old timer though, the new ones don't seem to wave back...) - and adding a grin too :D

But, I don't get the waves from Kombis ... Do the waves apply to Kombi-Beetle (or the other way round), and not just Beetle-Beetle, too ?

Starbug - May 14th, 2004 at 10:31 AM

i wave to every oldskool vw i see (1's. 2's 3's and golfs) and will smile and nod to newskool dubbers in the hopes i get a wave so i can wave back.

i find i get more waves from t3's than kombis, this also holds true for the ppl who own kombis who know my car

and seeing as how cherry is off the road atm, i just grin and stare at any dub i see and i get smiles and waves alot of the time:)

Shrek - May 14th, 2004 at 01:10 PM

I bought my Kombi off a pommy backpacker couple (friends of mine) and one of the first instructions to me was 'WAVE GODDAMN YOU!!' - so I do.

(just wanted to fight the backpacker VW cause!!)
