Hi I've got a 76 bay camper that I had a head on in..
(ouch)
I was wondering about parts compatibility between the 76 and a 71.. I know the front indicators, front grill, bumpers, and air scoops are different,
but what else..??
Are the doors, windows, engine mounts etc compatible?
Thanks heaps for any help..
ps.. was 73 the period still with low indicators and the bigger later style air scoops??
Thanks
Mike

thanx any help would be great!!
Mike
you say "bump"...
bump: :P
:o
Doors & Windows yes, but as regards to anything to do with engine, remember that a 71 is an upright motor & 76 is a type 4 motor, so mounts are different, what do you envisage doing? so we can give more specific help
I was thinking of changing my 2ltr into the 71... not possible?
and my gear box.... is it possible to covert them over??
Thanks for your help..
I don't know whether or not it is an easy job
1st bumer is that the earlier type does not have a top access lid above the engine, which makes accessability miserable, unless you are shaped like a
snake! I should also point out that an amazing amount of parts are different & not individually interchangable betwen the two vehicles, you would
be much better off in the long run finding a 1975 to 1979 model, as most parts on these are interchangable or identical
Thanx kombikim..
I have been looking for about 3 1/2 months and have gone to see about 15 bus's (late model) all have all been complete pieces of rust..
I think I may have found one without rust (71).. but would like to convet the engine and box.. not really worried about the other parts as much..
but... if it is way too hard to do... then i dont know..
please tell me it can be done :S:S:S
Thanks for all your help

I have been madly looking through workshop manuals, & at the very least I would say it is a miserable job & certainly not just a matter of
using spanners, I sure wouldn't want to attempt it, hang out a bit longer, lots of kombis come up for sale in trading post with dead motors, &
cheaper now it is winter , you can bet if you get the 71, a 76 will turn up a week later !
keep bumping this & someone who knows far more about the conversion than me will eventually read it & hopefully help
Thanks for your help kombikim.....
Ive been looking though my service manual which cover 68-76.... but I cant find anything specific about it....
I dont know what to do now.... sighs... ..... ummmm..... sighs....
Don't want to miss the boat.. so to speak... but also dont want to catch the wrong flight....

:puke
anybody?? Im looking in tech pages at moment.. hope i find something
Will the sharbuilt conversion kit work for a 2ltr kombi engine into a 71 bay?
Thanx for any help..
bumpety bump

to save you time and money, I can sell you a '76 camper that already has 2 litre in it for $3500.
very solid original bus.
Belongs to pmgbus
Thanx for the offer vwtyp2..
but just today I bought the "all original" 71 that was advertised in the buying/selling/swapping section.. so I guess I dont really have a choice
now lol.... Wont be converting the engine straight away as I dont have the cash now... but I will be soonish.. so I still need to work out what my
options are... Thanx dubbers for all your help..
Mike
