Bandwidth!
vanderaj - May 19th, 2004 at 12:19 AM

Hi everyone

Sorry for this, but I logged onto the logs, and we're not going to make it through this month unless we really get together to conserve bandwidth.

We're currently at nearly 17 GB. We have a 20 GB quota. May is a long month.

Please only click on images you really want to see. Please use your own ISP's web space for images you want to display as they cost Aussieveedubbers nothing and don't count towards our bandwidth costs. Please avoid posting images here until June if you can, and if you have to, make them as small as possible.

How to use your ISP's web space to upload:

If you use a really old web browser (like earlier than IE 6.0 or Netscape any earlier than NS 6.0), you should upgrade as it will support compression, which also helps us out, but as a side effect makes Aussieveedubber pages load much faster. IE 6.0 users (which is the majority of you) - please check that you have HTTP 1.1 set in your Tools -> Internet Options dialog (it's in the Advanced tab - scroll down a bit... both HTTP 1.1 settings should be ticked). HTTP 1.1 is also faster than HTTP 1.0 and supports compression.

thanks for your cooperation, and hopefully we can be here past this coming weekend.

Andrew

I have a pic in my signature...if this adds to the bandwidth problem I will gladly remove it.

Also what about the emoticons does that add to bandwidth as well ?

twoguns - May 19th, 2004 at 09:25 AM

your pic is hosted elsewhere so it shouldnt add to the problem.

I was thinking that maybe we should have an email list as well for the times when the forum goes off air with yahoogroups or the likes? Its always the case that you need someones phone number etc when the forum is down!

Just a suggestion.

Steve

Andrew also consider hosting the top logo on another server and the smilie thing images elsewhere. They appear on every page impression and that bandwidth mounts up over the millions of hits the site gets.

Cheers

Steve

guys if u want free hosting register to http://www.tyresmoke.net  and then go to galler and open ur own album

MikeM - May 19th, 2004 at 10:13 AM

Yeah all these manx club banners are host with AVD as well. I think they should be hosted somewhere else (ie on the manx club server? unless offcourse the manx club use the same server) but I think all images that can be hosted elsewhere should be.

The GIFs on this forum amount to about 200 MB of our 20 GB quota. It's not worth making that small amount go offsite yet.

Brad and the gang are looking around for a better hosting deal or more sponsorship to stay with the current crowd. When we find it, we'll let everyone know.

thanks,
Andrew

Anthiron - May 19th, 2004 at 01:08 PM

have you secured more bandwidth brad?

MikeM - May 19th, 2004 at 01:44 PM

Brad loves to be mysterious

Secoh - May 19th, 2004 at 03:31 PM

if not, http://www.ipowerweb.com  have really cheap deals, like $5us a month for 800mb and 40G bandwidth.

Brad - May 19th, 2004 at 04:13 PM

There are a lot of cheap ass deals going on and I am currently looking into a few. Only problem is quality of service. It is easy to give cheap hosting it is not so easy to find good cheap hosts.

From a bandwith point-of-view, I think this forum is constructed upside down (or is that episdn umop?) and have said so here:
