Moisture, salt and sand is not a kombi's friend
HotRodMatt - May 23rd, 2004 at 07:06 PM

Not even to bright metal yet and the effects of moisture are evident...

EEEeeeeeeekkk!!!

This is not good news!!

My Kombi is parked over the road from the beach and this is something that worries me.

And I thought living by the beach was a good thing.

Beachside living or preserved Kombi? What a tough choice :(

What's the history with yours Matt? Have you just bought or have you been storing it near a beach? Did you discover this rot when you 'opened her up'?

Judging by the sand that fell out of the outer chassis rail I suspect a lot of time at the beach. Still investigating now with a nail and will wire brush until I see bright metal.

Then get an opinion on how much to replace/repair etc...

Sad to say, but bad repairs have caused a lot of the rot... trapped water in like here...

Nasty , i used to park my car 2 subrbs away from the water , underground etc at $30 a week just so this doesn't happen. The Ocean kills cars!!

I am telling you now in my fairly professional opinion that you are better off getting another Kombi.
You would have to spend thousands to get the rust repaired and even then there would be area's that could be 99% rusted through, ready to show.

Trust me- do not spend any more time on that body.
