New beetle versus the old
pinklady_bug - June 9th, 2004 at 05:08 PM

I was wondering what you all think of the newer beetles compared to the old, I love both of them, but I am torn. I have the money there to buy an old beetle now and do it up so it looks absolutely schmick with mags and everything, or wait till I save up more money till the end of the year and get a 'second hand' new bug?!
Which do you think will be better in the long run because which ever one I get it will have to be with me for a long time. Just wanna know your opinions :)

Thanx :D

Tough choice, it really depends on what you want. I'm not sure what a second hand new beetle is worth. I'm guessing that for the same price you could buy a very nice old beetle which has already been done up so "it looks absolutely schmick with mags and everything". This is probably the cheapest way of getting a really nice classic car, unless you want to restore it yourself.

Keep in mind that a new beetle will depreciate as soon as you buy it, while an old beetle will hold it's value much better if it's looked after.
Have you driven both? If not, go for a test drive in both cars and see which you like better. An old beetle will be around 20 years old and won't drive like a modern car.

I'd save as long as I could, and then buy a restored/customised old beetle, just cos I love the air cooled.

Actually I'd buy a type 3, but that's not what you asked. (Although they are better... and rarer... and look cooler)

Dannyboy - June 9th, 2004 at 06:55 PM

Hard decision , depends what you want. A new beetle is basically a golf and an old beetle is like , well, like an old beetle!
Depends maybe on your driving habits aswell, distance etc .

I'd go old beetle and spend the money on good mechanics , new 1600 motor , discs , etc etc. That way it will be reliable as a golf and maybe more up for being driven alot.

Depends how you look at it but owning a beetle for me means it's an aircooled one!

Dan:):):)

silver - June 9th, 2004 at 08:18 PM

you will meet more people with a restored beetle
and they have soul!

BiX - June 9th, 2004 at 08:49 PM

what about both? a new beetle to commute and older cheapie to restore over time?

blutopless2 - June 10th, 2004 at 07:32 AM

depends on what you want out of the car.... and i agree with bix.... if you cant decide you might wanna get both... new one for daily and old one to restore.... or rebuild.

Che Castro - June 10th, 2004 at 09:16 AM

Mmm remember the New Beetle is actually a rebodied golf, so u get better spec, a proper boot for a cheaper price if u buy a golf :)

The NB will be a lot more comfortable than an oldie for daily driving, it'll need less maintainence and be more reliable generally. It is basically like any other new car. It will be also a hell of a lot safer in a crash.

An oldie will be noisy, no air con, slow (in stock form) and will need a lot more attention and will be harder to get one in good condition

However the oldie is less common, and more individual. Most NB's are more or less the same. The old one wont depreciate (but i'm not into cars for financial value). The best thing about the old beetle is that it is a cult car, you wave to every other ppl and they wave back. Most NB owners dont know and dont care :)

Personally I think the oldie is a lot more fun to drive, it also sounds better and goes as fast when modified. Dont be turned off an old beetle, just remember that it is a 30-40 year old car :)

Depends on when where and how you drive every day.

An old beetle has, as stated above lots of character, but a new beetle has alot of benefits too.
My suggestion Buy a New Beetle for daily driving, then purchase a Project car to tinker with for eternity.

We have a couple of new beetles in stock, come and have a drive of one.

ikube - June 10th, 2004 at 10:56 AM

If I were you I'll save up for a New one for daily driving cause it has everything you need, CD, air-con, power window + steering and so on...

and then after getting the New one, start saving for a old one, doesn't have to be in excellent condition (maybe $2000 - $3000), just enjoy the aircooled style, and then when you have more money, start building the old one to your dream machine, cruise with it weekend, and build up step by step :) I believe your account balance won't stop if you're working, so do it slowly... no rush on your aircool project at all !

Cheers~!

One is a Volkswagen beetle, the other is a front engined, water cooled car with a VW badge.
There is no comparison.

Man i love these posts.... sparks the debate over and over again..... and love the way people are categorised.. most nb's are more or less the same??? of course... aren't the ob's more or less the same????? and the debate about the waving thing?? most ob drivers i have come accross dont wave... have had more nb owners wave than old... guess it depends on where you are driving. :)

Y2K - June 10th, 2004 at 11:21 AM

OMG this debate is never ending. Blah blah blah. How about the old vw owners start giving some respect the new beetle owners.
"F***** hell we are all VOLKSWAGENS" as said by my bug. Yes she speaks to me and i respect her for that. Some people on here should take some lessons and learn how to respect.

I agree with ikube, go with the new one now and then save more for the oldie later on. Im on my second New Beetle(thanks Daz) and wouldnt trade it for anything

Hehe,

Not even for a little ride in this shiney new R32 Golf?

BiX - June 10th, 2004 at 01:14 PM

I got a ride in a R32, they are sweet. One thing though when planted it at lower rpm there seemed to be a lag b4 the power came on? like a lag? but it was sweet, the accel just doens't stop (i stopped looking at the speedo at 160)

Che Castro - June 10th, 2004 at 02:24 PM

Sorry didnt mean to get on anyone's toes! :D

There was a smilie at the end so it was meant to be sorta tongue-in-cheek.

I meant that they were all pretty similar because they have only been in production for about 6 years vs 50 or something for the old

lugnuts - June 10th, 2004 at 03:26 PM

Like was said ^ go for a drive in a NB then an OB yule know which one is for u,only u know.:)

nbturbo - June 10th, 2004 at 05:48 PM

Y2K-Spot on again.Don't you get sick of the same crap-It's always the same story-it's not a Volkswagen-it's not a Beetle-it's a Golf. I have been on the lookout for a while now and have never found a Golf that looks anything like a New Beetle(and b4 we hear about it being on the same floor pan-trot out the other 2 models of VW/Audi that use the same floor pan) I wouldn't trade my NB for anything else either. I have some air cooled Beetles as well and love them all.I can't get into Golf's at all but admire what people do to personalise them.

ikube - June 10th, 2004 at 07:03 PM

Volkswagen came all the way to this stage, and still is one of the top motor car companies around the world. I love every peice, no matter water cooled or aircooled ... they're amazing :) New beetle was invented cause VW knows that we all love the bugs :D keep all Vdubs alive! never give up or ONLY chase for the new ones... go both ways, & u'll be as happy as --> :bounce

btw, the R32 are amazing from reading reviews, I hope someday I'll get a chance to go for a ride or test drive or even own one !!!

Cheers~!

Don.

Mrs M - June 11th, 2004 at 07:40 AM

Yes these topics get a little hot but ... honestly no need to it just comes down to what you want out of your VOLKSWAGEN.

We own a variety of cars 1974 Kombi (With a Datsun 180B engine) drives nice and is reliable cheap to run (Unleaded) and cheap engine parts. The Country Buggy is stock standard and we have an old beetle turned into a Baja... lets say i have so so so so much fun in it and i would not trade her for anything..... but i do have a NB for the pure fact that its reliable and comfortable on long and short trips and has A/C I hate to break it to but the NB is still made by VOLKSWAGEN.

Some people are saying its a Golf with a new body but lets be realistic whats a Golf hmmmm a Volkswagen come on guys be fair.........

Well on that note i would have to agree that go both ways...... NB for the reliability, comfort and the modern feel and have an old beetle to do up and take on special outings.

Mrs M - June 11th, 2004 at 07:46 AM

P.S.

Some people may say that the old Beetles have more personality but some of the people that are saying this probably or maybe have not actually spent the time and gone a good run and have not bonded with a NB cause if they did they would find out that every NB has individual personalities.

So if you are looking at a NB take it on a good run..........Just some more food for mind

pinklady_bug - June 11th, 2004 at 09:39 AM

Wow...that was an interesting read :) I do agree with the people who are saying about getting the new beetle for daily driving (and i will still put a nice stereo and mags on it!) and then I can get an old beetle after a while a slowly do it up. I'm lucky that way coz my bf is very good with mechanics. See I have just sold a brand new mirage to buy a beetle and although I had every intention of getting an old one but I don't know if I could do it now because I have had the taste of a new car. But I still want to keep with the VW's!
I am one of those people who will wave to any sort of VW I see because I love them all and I think we are like a little community on our own. Some people just dont understand the thing we have for VW's and those few people are probably the ones that just go out and buy a new beetle for the hell of it. They are the people who don't wave.
My first car was a 1970 VW but the fetish started long b 4 that :) I think it was looking at all of the wedding photos from my parents and seeing the VW. They bought one new!
Basically I am saying I am greatly considering getting a new but that was a good idea to slowly do up an old one!
Anyways keep it flowing guys!

Thanx
Jo

mscabrio - June 11th, 2004 at 11:26 AM

I have a new beetle cabrio that I drive on a daily basis. I used to get really offended by the people that love to bag the new beetles and say that they are not Volkswagens, but as a good friend told me .... stuff em !!!!!!

I know that my car is realiable, it will start first time, runs well regardless of the tempreature, is comfortable, doesn't smell like oil, has full electrics and seat warmers for the sunny days when you open up the roof and it is still a bit chilly.

I think that I have got the better deal ..... Go the new beetle ! ......

Technology doesn't stop, and for those who say that the new beetles don't have a soul, then come and see me ... my cabrio is called Veronica and she has plenty of soul !

P.S ..... I also have an old beetle and I wave to other VW drivers !!!!!!!!!

nbturbo - June 11th, 2004 at 11:44 AM

mscabrio-What colour is Veronica? All of our VW's have names as well. Our Double Yellow NB is Mello, our white 64 is Vera, my Type4 powered Oval is Ferocious and the Kombi is Big Boy. Haven't named the 66 Beetle I am putting Country Buggy gear underneath yet,but is looking like he might become OffRoad.Just looking back over this-wonder why some are gender specific???????

Y2K - June 11th, 2004 at 06:07 PM

mscabrio- go you good thang

Chick names seem to be the trend these days.
nbturbo are you coming to valla?

Robo - June 11th, 2004 at 07:31 PM

A Beetle is a Beetle is a Beetle.
As long as it has a nice VW badge on it, It's a terrific car!!!

$2.63 homebrand baja - June 11th, 2004 at 08:06 PM

I agree a vw is a vw. Each model has it's own unique qualities. If you are in the position to get both, do it. The earlier models all require heaps o' dosh. The new are just part of the evolution. Over time all have been designed to fit market demands. New = comfort and convienience Old = nostalga and a certain dak dak raw grunt (if you tighten up the acellorator cable hehehe :thumb). The car reflects the owner. I have a dak dak grunter which gives me the shits but I luv it just as much as others do thier own rides. Lets not get into a mud slinging match of oldskool v's new as it will only fuel the fire and widen the gap. Everyone wave to eachother no matter wat ur driving! Whilst I drive a mutilated bug, I would just lurve to own a V6 bora... now thats not bug nor golf.... god help us wen they re introduce Kombis....... the cultural significance on that one  lol.
be happy wif wat ur driving and for god sake will u all start wavin at eachother! :thumb and yes daz if I am in positon down track i will come see you.lol

ByronBug - June 11th, 2004 at 09:04 PM

:sandrine
I agree... doesn't matter what kind of VW, as long as it is one.
If I had the money I would luv Y2K's (Maya's) black New bug
always wanted a black new turbo one.
But are too expensive for me, so I have my black old bug.
Either way, we must appreciate technology, cos were would we all be with out it.
Judy;)

Y2K - June 12th, 2004 at 08:27 AM
