Hi
I will be showing my ignorance here but can someone please let me know what the different types are for VW's
I know I have a Type 2 Splitty bus or is it a T2?
What about the various Kombi types,. I take it that type 3's are the bay window Kombi's. I had a 85 Caravelle-is that a type 4 or T4? What is the 5
cyl later model?
Squareback and Notches etc?
The Beetle is Type 1 (or is it T1?). Does that apply to all Beetles even the 1976 Superbugs

fastback squareback and notches are all type 3's.
in terms of T2 not sure
the T3 is the later model transporter
bay kopmbis are still type 2's. as far as i know all bays and splits are
that help??
I am not sure of the complete list of type 1 but it includes Beetle, Karmann, Type 181/182, Superbug, L Bug
All kombis, utes, panelvans, microbus are Type 2
A bay kombi, ute, panelvan, microbus is a Type 2 - T2 (the T is not short for 'Type'- maybe Transporter?)
After the T2 there are T2.5, T3, T4
Type 1 - all beetles etc like helbus said
Type 2 - ALL kombis from splits to the V5's. The T# relates to what model of kombi it is eg.
Type2 T1 = Split Screen
Type2 T2 = Bay window 68-79
Type2 T3 = Wegde 79-??
Type2 T4 = Front engine model etc
Type3 - Fastbacks, Notches, squarebacks etc. 60's-70's (?)
Type4 - Those really fugly little sedans that look like Austin A40's
70's (?)
I am not an expert on models but that is a general idea.
Type 1: Beetle
Type 2: Kombi
Type 3: Fast, square & Notchback
Type 4: Weird looking type 3'ish kind of thing
T3 - van from 79 onwards to early 90's. They were only known as the T3 in Oz. The proper model designation is Type25.
T4 - current generation of Transporters.
The splitty and bay kombis were never reffered to as T1 or T2. They seem to have been retroactively named by a few members of this forum. If you look
at ETKA (VW electronic parts catalogue) the Type1 is refferd to as T1, Type 2 as T2 (all years from 50 onwards.), Type3 as T3 and the T4 as the T4.
Personally I think VW got it right so if they refer to a beetle as a T1 it probably is.

Thanks guys
This thread is one to keep in the favourites column.
I am intrigued by the Type 4 description and don't know if I have ever seen such a vehicle. Has anyone got a pic to post of the Type 4?
What about the funny Type 3ish station wagon the 412 I think. Is that a different Type? I nearly bought one of these and the guy said that it had a
different motor in that it wa more powerful than standard VW offerings??
The 412 is a type 4. They came in a Fastback and squarebck style. There was a really cool green one with woodgrain sides that was featured in Hot VW's and Volksworld. If you look on http://www.thesamba.com you could probably find it in the gallery.
Personally I think they are ugly as sin, but its down to taste really

and the 412

Steve
The type 4's came with a 1700 or 1800cc motor putting out a tyre shredding 80hp. They're very different from any other air cooled VW in a lot of
ways. Check this out.

i kinda like it :|
pics for the unknown,
Starting with type 1
I like them too!
I actually learned to drive in one! My parents own a '68 411 two door sedan. They have owned it since 1971 when my Dad found it sitting in a car
yard in Sydney. It had been a dealer demo vehicle (so that VW Aust could gauge the reaction of the Australian public to the 'new ideas' that VW had
incorportated into the Type IV) but had been de-commissioned after it had a minor tangle with a truck, causing some damage to the passenger side rear
guard. Dad had it fixed and put it into daily use until they 'updated' to a Hyundai (YUK!) in 1998. It is still registered (on club plates) today,
but hasn't been driven since 1998. Needs a bit of work to make it drivable again, but now that Dad has retired (2 weeks ago) perhaps it will get the
attention it deserves....
The type IV's were available in a number of foms:
2 door sedan;
4 door sedan;
3 door station wagen (variant);
They were designated as a 411, then in 1970 (or was it '71...not sure now) VW gave them a face lift with new front lights and a new bonnet, and a
bigger engine (up from 1700cc to 1800cc) and called them the 412. Personally I prefer the 411's, but I might be bias....
As I said I learned to drive in my parents 411, and I really like they way they handle, however they have earned the nickname 'tunaboats' because of
there really light steering, which tends to get lighter the faster you go! They are very quiet on the road and are huge inside, with no centre tunnel
to speak of. They have a hydralic (sp?) clutch which can be a pain to get parts for.
I can take photos of my parents car if you are interested in it (or any part of it) - just let me know.
There is actually a fair bit of information on the 'net about the type IV's, just do a search for 'VW type 4' or 'VW type IV' through google or
similar.
I would be interested to catch up with anyone who has a Type IV here in Australia (running or not), as I have a bit of a soft spot for them - Might
even start a register for them if I get enough interest. (I know of three on the Gold Coast - my parents, the white 4 door in the pics above (both in
our club), and a red 4 door 412 (which is currently for sale I am told).
