Hosts Portugal crashed to a 2-1 defeat against Greece in the opening game of Euro 2004 as Otto Rehhagel's men recorded their first ever victory in a major championship.

Greece started brightly as first Zisis Vryzas then Georgios Seitaridis caused panic in the Portugal defence although on both occasions the danger was cleared.

But with just six minutes on the clock Greece did take the lead as Georgios Karagounis picked up the ball and advanced from midfield before firing the ball home from just outside the box.

That finally spurred Portugal into life and Greece goalkeeper Antonios Nikopolidis fumbled under pressure from Pedro Pauleta before Angelos Basinas cleared.

The hosts continued to look rattled at the back, though, and Angelos Charisteas should have done better after breaking into the Portugal box down the right.

Jorge Andrade went close with a speculative shot at the other end before Charisteas again went close twice, heading a Stelios Giannakopoulos corner over the bar before testing Ricardo with a left-footed shot from outside the box.

Luiz Felipe Scolari reacted by bringing on Deco and Cristiano Ronaldo at the break but the move backfired within six minutes as the latter tripped Seitaridis in the area and Basinas expertly finished from the penalty spot.

Greece kept Portugal largely at arm's length thereafter although Ronaldo did head home a late consolation goal from Luis Figo's corner.

They made such a big deal out of Luis Figo and Portugal if they can win the EURO they didnt even mention Greece- maybe others who ordered the game PPV heard Lineker and his buddies Bullshit about portugal this that - and at the end they say "oh and a word on greece?" and they said a total of 1 sentence about the condition of the team...... that sort of bullshit pissed me off and Greece were written off before the match - despite tying 1-1 with 10 men last november...

man it was an awesome day and i havent had much sleep

We got there at 2:30 and started getting turpsed up

anyways come game time i said i wasnt going to drink anymore as i needed to sober up for work so i started watching the game then half time came so i felt pekkish so i grabbed some cashews at 6am

these cashews were nice so i grabbed 3 more packets and shared them with the guys also with a coke (not a bad breakky :roll: )

Anyways come full time i was knackered so i went and grabbed a Red bull to give me some wings :mrgreen: then when Greece scored it was all over i couldnt stop jumping i went beserk!!!!

But 10mins later i really didnt feel well and was about to bring up what I consumed as the adrenalin, emotions, and breakky welled up inside me but some how i kept it in

I cruised down to Brighton and there was whole convoy of cars with Greek flags including mine filling up all 3 lanes it was nuts

then behind me in my rear view I saw this white Sylvia with the BIGGEST Greek flag ive ever seen sticking out of his sunroof (must of knicked it from a shopping centre ) it was an awesome site! All cars charging down Princess highway like the cavalry charging for War

It was an awesome day and work was a drag but i made it this far!

Icant wait till Monday and i dont care if we win or lose cos Greece have done their best ever!

Brighton Le Sands closes street to broadcast FOX SPORTS coverage of Greece v Portugal EURO 2004 Final


Soccer fans are expected to flood Brighton Le Sands in Sydney early on Monday morning to watch the EURO 2004 Final between Greece and Portugal being broadcast LIVE and exclusively on FOX SPORTS 2.

This follows an agreement with the Rockdale City Council, together with FOX SPORTS and FOXTEL, to allow fans to watch the game on a specially erected large screen.

FOX SPORTS, which has exclusive Live telecast rights for the EURO 2004 championships, sought and received special permission from UEFA to allow the live public broadcast to go proceed.

“We’re delighted to provide FOX SPORTS’ exclusive feed of the EURO 2004 final for this special public telecast, allowing soccer fans to embrace the community spirit of one of the world’s premier sports events,” said David Malone, CEO of Premier Media Group, which produces the FOX SPORTS Channels.

FOX SPORTS coverage begins at 4.30am with a pre game show with the final kicking off at 4.45am on Monday morning. EURO 2004 Live final coverage will be broadcast on FOX SPORTS 2, which is available on FOXTEL, Optus and Austar subscription television platforms and through FOX SPORTS commercial outlets.

The Rockdale Council will erect the screen in Bay Street (near the corner Moate Avenue)
Brighton Le Sands to ensure a safe and festive environment for fans to watch the final.
