i work in a servo doing both counter work and driveway service (yes we still do this for the time being, and yes I will fill your car:thumb) in Redland Bay Brissie which up untill recently was and still does, have a higher % of retired and elderly people (just look at all the retirement villages, there's more than schools). I can honestly say that from just what i've seen in our servo that somwhere from 50%-75% of oldies coming in are either not capable of driving properly or have forgotten the road rules with age or something (too many pills...). Some of the stuff i've seen is scarey, things like, the common "park waaay too far away from the pump so that the hose (which is longer than normal) doesn't reach and drive off angrily, get angry at me, or try again and end up in the same spot only 2 inches closer" routine. Or take out the plastic bins that are situated within two heavy (truck proof- i've seen one hit it and not bend or dint it) steel barriers protecting the pumps. Or park infront of the door so that no one can get out or in and get pissed off about the "bad customer service" when they are asked to move their cars. We've have them take out Gas bottles, and the Swap and Go containers and NOT stop and drive away, many, many close accidents and a couple of actual ones, people (including me and other staff) nearly getting hit and so on and so forth the list is endless and i've only been working there 2 years. To finish I'd like to use as an example one old gentleman who regularly used to come in every saturday (when i used to work :cussing) to put in $10 and gets his water and oil checked and that's all (never any bread, milk anything) and because he was quite old we automatically do the driveway service for him, and he was rude, 3/4's deaf (with two hearing aids!) and had the thickest glasses i have ever seen (half blind- he told me so) and tells me every week that his fuel guage is broken and that he doesn't know how much fuel to put in and has a discussion and trys to justify it to me and see's (every week) if i can fix it. He was THE worst driver I have ever seen, just watching him drive out of the servo I was waiting for him to hit something or someone (very close many times), I saw him in cleveland once trying to reverse park in a street, he was blocking both lanes and kept reverseing and going forward trying to work out why the rear end kept raising...he was reversing into a garden(in the middle about a meter on each side) and couldn't adjust accordingly. People of that calibre should NOT be driving and just from the photo that old lady looks to be in that catagory...tunnel vision has no concept of what is going on around her. i don't have anything at all against elderly drivers, I serve them all the time at work and a lot of them drive very well, I just help them do their tyres and fill up etc but my point stands.

Me and some friends almost killed a pair of oldies about a month ago. We were on the open road and they were coming the other way wanting to turn into a side road. They just pulled straight across in front of us, the only reason we didn't hit them was cause we were in a modern car with ABS, and my mate swerved into the other lane (luckily there wasn't anything else in the oncoming lane) missing them by about a foot. If we had gone straight we would've killed them both. But just like the pic, they didn't even see us, and didn't even stop!
I wanted to chase them and get their keys off them but my mate was a bit shaken.
Too much emphasis is put on 'boy-racers' over here, where drivers like these could easily take out a family.

does make you wonder if there should be a 2nd driving test that we sit when we retire....90% of us would pass but that 10%....
