Using the forum to advertise companies.
HotRodMatt - December 17th, 2002 at 10:41 AM

I posted the following earlier in a thread about parts wanted... thought it should stand alone as a topic for discussion.

[snip]
For christ's sake... does every reply have to be an ADVERTISMENT for VVDS?

Sure they have all the bits and pieces but people are asking here most the time cause they want to keep the cash flowing around with people doing projects. I'd rather buy something someone doesn't need and get them closer to finishing a project if I can before going to a shop.

I've looked at four posts this morning and all of them have said go to Campsie.

Is this a forum for enthusuasts or free advertising for a company?
[snip]

If people wanted to purchase from a business, they know who and where they are. They would be ringing shops not asking fellow enthusiasts.

The occassional mention of companies is helpful - when people are looking for specialist advice or services. But the constant reply of X or Y has them often along with price and an urging to purchase from them is offensive.

If this is going to continue as a common practice then these companies should be sponsoring the forum as recognition of the free advertising they are getting.

Matt

I 2nd that!:o

fatboy - December 17th, 2002 at 10:58 AM

I disagree.

If i am looking for a "Bit" and ask here then anyone with said "Bit" has the opportunity to yell out. If they dont what am I supposed to do ? start ringing round ?
I (and many other people on the site) am new(ish) to VWs' and simply dont know of all the suppliers / what they stock and which ones are good to deal with.

Surley the one of the purposes of this site is to share information :thumb

vw54 - December 17th, 2002 at 01:18 PM

Matt

nice to have you back on the forum youve been GONE for a while.

Adz n Fatboy thanks for that,,, some people view things differently. no problems i will continue to advise people who may not be aware of various VW shops that have items available.

and your right theres a lot of NEW people around, and just getting into different cars

Surley one of the purposes of this site is to share information:kiss:kiss

Bizarre - December 17th, 2002 at 01:27 PM

I will step in too - i dont see a problem. Someone has missed something if they are asking and havent rung round themselves.

eg - i am after some performance T4 parts.

No probs - bit vague the question, but whats the problem directing him to someone that specialises in these things.

I was aftert some parts for Daisy the Vanagon....yep ended up at Campsie raiding what Boris had stashed in a couple vans he had lying round.

Anyone who reads STF wants the likes of John C and (heaven forbid Jake) to say - Aircooled.net sells em

68AutoBug - December 17th, 2002 at 01:55 PM

I don't really see a problem , but I think someone should say Mick at Mick Motors has the part.... but ALAS probably No one knows if He has the part or not....
and YES !! I can see the other side ...... too..

Most of Us are looking for Bargains .. and if We want to buy from a Business... We will probably just ring them and NOT mention it on here at all... Thats what I do anyway ..... I suppose Most of Us have Our Favorite VW shops & most of Us have a list of Businesses We will never go near again... LOL...
I usually email Mick & Christine.... in Brissy
:)

KruizinKombi - December 17th, 2002 at 04:58 PM

I've used Mick Motors and found them excellent. They even sent the parts when I didn't send them enough cash - no problem I'll be using them again soon.

I don't have a problem to the occasional pointer to other companies, but I'd rather see those companies offer sponsorship to the forum, and get an ad placed here in return. I have no idea about the politics of sponsorship, but I see no reason why we can't have more than one sponsor.

I do see a problem with repeated posts about VW suppliers who are not sponsors. Mick pays for the privilege, why should other suppliers get advertising for free?

HotRodMatt - December 17th, 2002 at 07:28 PM

My point exactly Kruizin.

I am in no way dissing VVWS. I've bought and will buy in the future from them.

Just don't believe that any one company should keep being mentioned all the time with almost every request/query that goes on the list.

Maybe anyone that rings a dealer from here should tell 'em where they got the info and suggest that if they sponsored they would probably get a whole lot of business from members.

kombi_kid - December 17th, 2002 at 07:34 PM

time for a new section!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why not have a page with a list of the business's everywhere around australia and write a short bit in what they specialize in and they contact details!!!! easist way i think!!!!
cheers
rhys

vw54 - December 18th, 2002 at 06:51 AM

Col

Ive been at Brad ( for about 6 months) to formalize the terms n conditions in a letter, but he was waiting for Jim etc etc etc....

VVDS will be a sponsor when the terms are announced.

and i suspose a few other companies for that matter. Like Volkspower in Mel where EMPI works, perhaps even V force in Sydney.

fatboy - December 18th, 2002 at 08:11 AM

HotRodMatt " Maybe anyone that rings a dealer from here should tell 'em where they got the info and suggest that if they sponsored they would probably get a whole lot of business from members."

Great Idea. I have contacted the peopl who make POR 15 and requested a catalogue. They have a area to let them know how you found their website. So I suggest everyone looking for POR 15 order a catalogue and mention this forum and its sponsership.

website for por 15 is http://www.ppc.au.com

SKEWtYpe3 - December 18th, 2002 at 11:08 AM

I was getting annoyed with the much to common

call XXXX they have it ..........

after every part request.
good to see the free advertising is turning into sponsorship

difference here is/was that i had no idea empi worked for volkspower... but after most wanted posts came up he would say, "I have one call me." (i honestly thought he was just some insane collector that had everything) Nothing wrong with that...
i spose if there was no mention of a campany name then it wouldn't be advertising.. just referring.

just a thought.

To the admins though... i reckon we should have more banners for Micks Motors, the guy sponsors the site and run a really good business (i have bought from there many a time, plus other places (won't mention names! ;) )) but i think he should get alot more coverage for his sponsorship.. no use being a silent spnsor.

matara - December 18th, 2002 at 03:52 PM

Dave,

Why haven't VVDS got a proper website? I'm sure Boris gets thousands of petty calls (have you got a grommet for a ... etc) that they answer every day! I think we need a good supplier website in Australia that at least displays prices and stock availability. They are everywhere else!

Cheers

Steve

P.S I don't mind the plugs, at least it increases Daves post count!?!

vw54 - December 18th, 2002 at 04:55 PM

Steve i often wondered how my post count went up so quick

yes he has one http://www.vintageveedub.com.au/  but like every thing it takes time n effort.

Ive been hounding him for ages to get some information together. BUT

speedster356 - December 18th, 2002 at 05:32 PM

That might be the new years project then Dave? http://www.get_of_my_arse_and_ do_it.com.au:D

68AutoBug - December 18th, 2002 at 06:04 PM

I have even received parts without sending any money at Micks Motors...
Has anyone found that [NOT counting DAVE] at V V D S, ????
and also I thought EMPI was selling his own parts.... not Volkspowers..... Maybe He will have to ring a bell like John Laws !!! So We can tell the difference between retail & a Bargain....
What do others think... Sorry I haven't read the other threads have been out all afternoon... Lee - A Proud Supporter of Micks Motors... and I have NO connection with Mick motors and have never met Him or Christine....

68AutoBug - December 18th, 2002 at 06:11 PM

Instead of ALL of us going to Campsie... how about looking at Rhys suggestion... I'm not sure how it would work... but Maybe We could list what We have bought and the price charged... or just a quick note of Where We have spent out hard earned cash.... and If We WERE satisfied-Not Satisfied-etc.... or - Never go back again.... etc...
What do You all think AVD members .... :bounce:bounce:bounce

fatboy - December 18th, 2002 at 07:51 PM

How about posting an "Etiquette" Guide it could advise people on the prefered method of buying parts such as:

1. Post a request for parts and purchase from any forum member who has it.
2. If no forum member has it contact one of the sponsers (I'm assuming there will be more than one)
3. If 1 & 2 dont give you a result contact any of the other suppliers that people reply with in step 1.

If this were posted as a seperate area then we can all post an "I agree" message under it.

This would show our current sponsor that we are going to support them in return for the sponsorship and also if prospective sponsors see a list of 500 customers who have pledged to activley seek to purchase from them it would be a big incentive.

amazer - December 18th, 2002 at 08:04 PM

I think its all just a bit of a whinge. Coming from me that must mean something since I am usually the first person to get on the soap box to have a petty whinge.

I'd much rather read (in black type) that VVDS stocks whatever than to wade through some garbage about dipping my chains in hot dripping (a jar of oil would do nicely, no farting around heating) or being forced to imagine the colour scheme on someones desktop which I imagine looks like Dave Birchalls toilet bowl after a long night on the crownies or wishing ones self happy birthday or ....

Just get your stuff from wherever is convenient for you. I mean what is the alternative when someone says "where do you get it?" Do we have to list every supplier in Australia? I think that would be interesting. From now on it will be "you can get it from VVDS but then you can also get it from Dak Dak Motors, House of Hitler, Dodgy Dans Deutchland Direct ....... ad nauseum"

fatboy - December 18th, 2002 at 08:08 PM

mmm......... Cant remember seeing an Ad for a nauseum where would I get one of those :P

Grey 57 - December 18th, 2002 at 08:10 PM

House of Hitler LMAO. Thats bloody funny.:D:D:D

jenz58 - December 18th, 2002 at 08:28 PM

How did all this start again?

I was beginning to think it was a post I did, being in my usual paranoid state but I think I found the start of it. I'm not slow!!:(

We're all after parts of some discription pretty mcuh all the time. Some needed immediately, some in preparation for work. Somehow I think sourcing 'the right part at the best price' is all part of it all.

Agreed as yet Mick Motor's is the only one willing to support us Vee Dubb junkies with sponsorship, a champion!!!!! :)

We do need to support onshore businesses but the internet is having a huge impact across many retail areas, it is real competition and Australian businesses need to become very internet savvy. Buyers definitely know more about what is available and at what price.

Bizarre - December 18th, 2002 at 08:48 PM

oK i am too bloody lazy to ring Mick but does he sell 2nd hand parts?
I can only gather from Empi that Volks whatever does, I know Boris has a crap load of junkers sitting out the front. Yep i am a guilty party here i push my beer mates at V Force cause they have crap all over the place.
What i am saying is people who sell new stuff .... well we all know that, but shops that have junk about that is different. Just cause Doris or Fred had one last week dont mean they have it next week.
Yep Empi does it himself and it prolly escapes notice that way ( and i aint complaining) but when i am after the tracks for the middle seats for Daisy i dont care who has it ... shop, church, govt department or grand mother ....cause i know i cant buy it new.

This is boring

Can we talk about beers

jenz58 - December 18th, 2002 at 08:50 PM

What your prefered brew??:)

Bizarre - December 18th, 2002 at 08:56 PM

Bizarre - December 18th, 2002 at 09:00 PM

Buggy Boyz - December 18th, 2002 at 10:01 PM

Righto then this is sort of my fault.
I have been trying to get a sponsorship deal out of Jim as he was the " Forum God / Credator " After many many months I have been unable to do this.
I did not wish to setup teh sponsorship deal as I have close links with several businesses and didn't wish to create any issues ( a strang idea, for those who know me :D )
Anyway enough is enough. I will type up and post on teh forum tonight what the proposed deal is. It will remain there for comment of teh members for the next 72 hours after which time it will be modified if required then become fact.
I have looked into all the relevant issues and will be running it through the Manx Dune Buggy Club Books. This is because they are an inc club and it is the easiest legal way to do it. For their trouble they will receive a commision. This will cover the hassles of doing it.
Check out the new topic for full details.
