Poll - Volkswagen's bid for Rolls-Royce
jenz58 - December 21st, 2002 at 10:32 AM

Volkswagen spent $790 million bidding for Rolls-Royce. The result was Volkswagen owning a stable of Rolls-Royce vehicles. But there's a problem. The question is: What did Volkswagen fail to receive as part of the bid for Rolls-Royce?

Good poll!

I'm gonna go with the factories because 790 mill is a fairly short figure for what I think the whole kit would be worth when you consider all the marine rolls royces out there.

Truly I'm just guessing. This is a great poll Jenz. Look forward to the answer.

I haven't voted yet, because I can't work out what the question is. :o

Strike that, the moment I posted, I got into the posts and got to read the question!

The answer? I have NFI!!!

I'm not telling yet!!!:D

Had no idea about the Volkswagen Rolls-Royce deal until 2-3 months ago when I was talking to someone about VW'S and our weekend in Marysville that was coming up. Well generally doing the whole addicts rave.

Ron told me that he'd heard VW had bought out or into an English car company but could not remember details. Rolls-Royce certainly is a name that comes to mind and it was.

Well I'll give the answer after 20 posts. The way I post half of them will probably be mine!!:party

I know the answer, but won't give it away.

The good thing and the funny thing, is that BMW are shafted by the deal and the Bentley name is going to become THE name again after so many years as just a badge for sporty RRs.

As my dad says anyone doing a deal with VW should count their fingers after they shake hands. How did BMW miss that one? A head should roll for sheer incompetance :D

In a way, perhaps, the question should be BMW bought the Rolls Royce name but failed to secure what?

Seeing as i am in the UK and Rolls Royce is part of our heritage i should know! But i dont for sure! I am 90% sure it was the rolls royce name tho, as i thought BMW? still owned it and that VW only owned the bently name?

Rob.

BMW only own the name... VW own the factory the infrastructure and the Bentley name. VW are meant to continue making RRs for BMW, but it isn't going to happen. So VW are laughing and BMW are f**ked... again LOL :D Not looking like there will be any / many more RRs made... but Bentley is the name with the real heritage ;)

jenz58 - December 22nd, 2002 at 07:03 PM

OK I think this poll is closed. Volkswagen did fail to receive the name!!

The story

Following fierce bidding between Volkswagen and BMW, Volkswagen became the proud owner of Rolls-Royce. But, there was a problem. After spending over $790 million, Volkswagen failed to acquire one key component " The Rolls-Royce name!" BMW acquired the Rolls-Royce name for a mere $66 million. BMW plans to begin production of the Rolls-Royce luxury coupe in 2002.

Did BMW start production of that luxury coupe?

And that was our weekend poll for the 21-22 Dec.

Ghia - December 22nd, 2002 at 07:43 PM

No they havn't made any yet. They realised they need to make them themselves and want to build a brand new factory near Goodwood (which is about 60 miles south of London, near the coast. and where I lived for a bit). The plan is to start building early in 2003 and be making cars by late 2003... to be honest though the general feeling here is that it's BMW who have got this all wrong and not VW.

I'm sure BM will sell plenty of them in the States, but UK customers already prefer the Bentley name to RR name and show this by buying ten times more Bentleys. In recent years sales of RRs have fallen back to almost nothing.

BMW RR may look like this:

Or maybe it will send BMW broke, and we'll lose yet another marque to one of the huge motor companies snaping up everyone else. BMW supposedly lost a packet on Range Rover.

Its my pleasure to get involved, I saw a post on one of the UK forums about some of you guys getting p*ssed off that us Pommies steal your dubs and thought yeah to right and thought i'd check out the forums.

It seems that this forums and ones such as the Shop talk froums are more my sort of style! Theres too much crap, politics and pointless posts on our main UK forum!

Anyway getting back to the point! I feel on my feet and got it right, I would have had to hang my head in shame if i were wrong seeing as RR WERE a uk industry.

BTW what does this all mean for RR jet engines are they made by someone else?

Rob.

Ghia - December 23rd, 2002 at 01:24 AM

Rob, couldn't agree more about the UK forum ;)

And yes the jet engines are British Aerospace.

Doh!! I only just realised you are from the UK, Hello mate where in south London are you? I am in Lee.

Rob.

Phil74Camper - December 23rd, 2002 at 10:23 PM

As I recall, the Rolls Royce aero engine division was a separate entity from the car making company, and wasn't affected by the bidding between VW and BMW.

Basically the result is that Rolls Royce and Bentley get split up. Rolls Royce goes to BMW, and Bentley goes to VW.

Who cares ??!!

VW also owns Bugatti and Lamborghini. I couldn't give a toss. Why don't VW buy Subaru instead, so we can have flat four-engined VWs again?

London Bugger - December 23rd, 2002 at 10:32 PM

VW arent our friends anymore anyway!! I dont have any respect for modern Vw's or VW's values as they have forgotten their history!!

Anyway the subaru engine is virtually a re badged VW as Subaru apparently had to pay VW for the design/licencing of the flat 4 motor!

Rob, I live just outside now in Surrey. But lived in Wandsworth for most of my adult life :)

London Bugger - December 24th, 2002 at 11:11 AM
