i drove all day with about 800 kilos of wood furniture in the back from smithfield to botany then down to caringbah
i was abit concerned about i my bay was stressing but she seemed ok all day , has anyone carried major stuff in their kombis "i suppose thats wat they were designed for"

I've had just over a tonne of bushrock in mine.
2nd gear up hill & certainly cleared any cobwebs from the 1600.

They'll take heaps!!! At least a tonne....

Just to prove it wasn't a fluke, this one is 5' lengths of hardwood....

Well a Kombi is designed to carry 9 people and some luggage so.....

9 x 100kg = 900kg plus some luggage say 100kg..... that's 1 tonne

Also on the compliance plate of my 77 it says GVM of 2200kg. Unladen the 77 is about 1200kg so that's a 1 tonne payload.

I remember reading about the history of the Bus. Sometime during the sixties (splitties!) the official load capacity was increased from 750kg to 1000kg. This wasn't from any official source though.

me and my dad went to sydey olympics to watch the sailing on the harbour. towed the 1300 kg trailer sailer down the new england highway from brisbane in his 2l 74 kombi. averaged about 80km/h.

Andy, our '77 bus states 2250 GVM on the compliance plate.
On our round Oz trip we weighed just over that for the whole trip.
We even towed a stranded falcon wagon fully loaded along part of the Gib River Rd (north WA).
No problem (well not many)

I've had 2 pallets of pavers in one. Couldnt drive it though, couldnt turn the steering wheel. When hellbug was closing we had one filled to the roof with engine bits/heads/cases to take down the road to recyclers. It was on the bump stops, didnt stop real well.

I have towed with a 3 tonne plus rolling mass. That was with a turbo, and that didnt last. It would be OK with a good engine though. But not legal.

if i lower it will it still be able to carry the same if cbb lower it properly and i get some good shocks? lowering next week {4"}

picking up my 59 split from taree in the next few days , truckie lives there & for $200 will bring it up on back load , i will trailer 59 the rest of the way . after reading these stories 74 2ltr should be fine has good motor pro service every 3 mths since i aquired it 8 yrs now (original log book amazing serviced in madagascar nigeria so on)

if that means putting heavier torsion bars in then it will be OK. Otherwise I think you will be bottoming out with heavy loads.
