I used to do a radio program called the Horror Show on 4ZZZ in Brisfrancisco.

It was a stoner cult classic. We'd talk stupid crap for 3 hours a week in Transylvanian accents, and one segment we liked to do backmasking.

Instead of going out for metal and such, we searched for nasties in Tipper Gore's favourite artists. I'd spend about a half day a week searching for stuff on vinyl, and found heaps. I think I got an "I love smokin' Marijuana" out of a Rick Astley once. It's a shame I cant remember more. My ex-girlfriend/co-presenter got the tapes in the separation. Bummer - as I did all the work! I must look her up again some time!

my mate Chris was a big Led Zep fan.
we got out his Led Zep album on vinyl out one night, and spun it backwards on the turntable.
for all the sceptics out there, it is not bullshit. it really works.
we played dark side of the moon backwards too ( I was the Floyd fan) and got some crazy sounds out of that too. can't remember what it was though.
listening to too much Zep and Floyd causes memory loss.

Rather than use "his" sample - I used my own recording of the section of stairway. Reversed it and played it a various speeds... lets just say it sounds remarkably different.

With only 26 letters in the English language making approximately 87 sounds there is good chance that any random combination of words backwards could be construed as sounding like other words.

Particularly when prompted by an interpretation. There are a few good studies on this available both in psychology journals an also on the web. Recognition jumped over something like 80% when an interpretation was provided.
