Vehicle Identification Number.

Unique number for each car. In our case it only applies to the chassis not the body.

The numbers indicate the build date. Do a google search for specifics. been raised on this forum a lot of times

vin numbers apart from individually id'ing a car also tell you specifics (most of the time) like body type, engine size, what series, year and so on....

it is different for each manufacturer...

with mazda (for whom i do parts) i can tell engine size and occasionally wheel bases and carrying capacity by just looking at a vin but if i punch the number into my computer it tells me everything! colours, trim types, bla bla bla...

hope that helps

oh, and if your talkin VW then someone has a list or program on here with which you can figure out what your vin means...
