Cool looking Barndoor, I've got a 59 exPMG Panelvan, in similar condition, but not with those wheels.

azz - February 20th, 2003 at 08:55 PM

I dont get it?
What is 'Rat Look'?

Grey 57 - February 20th, 2003 at 09:08 PM

azz, rat look is rough, rusty and original on the outside , but fitted with big motor , and good mechanicals on the inside. Topped off with a nice set of wheels.
Best ones still have faded signwriting from past days as a work van.

azz - February 21st, 2003 at 03:11 AM

How many people like them here?
Is it a happening group in australia?

save money on the respray i suppose

splitbusaustralia - February 21st, 2003 at 07:18 AM

That's the 'Mercury' bus - quite famous
in the US.

I like the 'rat' look (orig body often
*very* rusty, logo preferred, phat motor,
mags, lowered) and my barney will be a
bit like this since I'm struggling for funds
to do it 'properly' first up.

Probelm with Oz is that you'd never get
away with visible rust hanging out
everywhere - never get a legit
roadworthy and if you could fudge it
you'd get nothin but grief on the
road....Many US states and European
countries require a safety inspection
which is simply lights brakes etc - body
condition isn't covered at all...

Once you fix the rust as required here
you must paint (those bits anyway) and
the look is gone.....

I'm thinking about a primer look or brown
zinc chromate base and paint and then
rubbing back to get a flattish paint job
rubbed through to the primer in a few
spots (ie the pseudo orig paint ratitsh
look)..

Indicators?? Semaphores??
Love the extended bumper!! :)

kustomkool - February 21st, 2003 at 01:17 PM

Ratlook is cool,And that bus rocks,Its a pitty there isnt many ratlook dubs in oz.You dont need rust to get away with the ratlook its all about being creative as Rob mentioned you can also use primer.Another way to acheive this is keep the original paint work repair dents etc and prime panels etc and leave it primed slam it polish up the chrome some mad wheels and add a bit of accessories and there you have it just be creative.Remember the mechanics have to be up to scratch too.

last celtic warrior - February 21st, 2003 at 01:40 PM

I reckon it looks sh!t hot. I'm printing it and framing it...

jenz58 - February 21st, 2003 at 04:49 PM

I luuuuuuv it:kiss

But if the rust is not eating through the body, just superficial? A clear flat coat of something (so technical :D)?

KruizinKombi - February 21st, 2003 at 06:51 PM

I'd be tempted to use the red oxide, but I think I'd settle for matt black.

wrecker67 - February 21st, 2003 at 07:44 PM

sweet ride this is in the future for me.
LOOK OUT!!!!!

jenz58 - February 21st, 2003 at 08:25 PM

OvalGlen - February 21st, 2003 at 09:50 PM

I'll second that , do up a "Rat " and show it.
That would make for variety.
Would allow another out for creativity.

tracash242 - March 2nd, 2003 at 11:33 AM

Quickbug - March 2nd, 2003 at 07:46 PM

Mags are worth more than the car
:P:P

Mr Bubble Head - March 4th, 2003 at 04:58 PM

:mad::o:(;):D:P

Che Castro - March 4th, 2003 at 11:31 PM

yeah i quite like rat look. I think rikki james' 23 window barn is a great example. Its on the http://www.vintagebus.com website.

Do most people pass u on rego if its only surface rust?

Primer patches are cool, along with lots of dents :)

empi - March 5th, 2003 at 12:56 PM

Rikkies bus is one MAAAAD mother f#%*in bad ass bus .
Was at the Ace cafe meet in the uk with Rikki at the end when all were leaving he made his bus do a wheel stand past the entire cafe (big long building)
A 1953 bus ,12am, winter in uk, safari windows open, no seat belts,2.6 motor and no warning of launching..... scary!....but insane fun!
Check out Rikkies site i think its www monsterbus.com.
cheers
Adam

Quickbug - March 5th, 2003 at 04:07 PM

Good to see you around again Cam!

Anyways ive been thinking about this a bit, and since my 72bug is several different colours, as well as scratched and dented, i think im going to sand it back and sit it in primer. Polish up another set of mags i have handy and fit them. Eventually slam it down, and combined with the 1916cc in it, i think itll look good.

whatnow - March 6th, 2003 at 11:13 AM

i recomend checking out http://www.rat-look.de
there are some v.cool cars there.
one of my fave's is the linde bus in his fave section. having seen this car in the flesh all i can say is that it is totally crazy.
the only thing crazier was the guy that built/used to own it.

Che Castro - March 8th, 2003 at 03:14 PM

check out this bus... great rat look candidate...

whatnow - March 9th, 2003 at 10:22 PM

an early oval ratlooker at VW euro in 2001.

whatnow - March 9th, 2003 at 10:37 PM

the linda bus at vw euro 2001. the pic isn't the best but it is the only one i took :(
look at how the exhaust is sitting and you get the idea how low this thing is. the guy who owned it drove it over 500 km each way to get there.

OvalGlen - March 13th, 2003 at 09:26 PM

Shame to have the pic hidden

OvalGlen - March 13th, 2003 at 09:28 PM
