LSD for Kombi's anyone??
Andy - February 26th, 2003 at 08:03 AM

Just passing on some info from the US forum type2.com

"List,

I just finished talking to the guys out at Weddle Engineering to see if the
rumors of Quaife (sp?) limited slip rear ends for the 091 were true. Sadly,
they are not but the company is willing to do a limited run of at least
30 units. If 15 orders for the $1200 unit could be mustered, Weddle might
cover the rest. So far, there have been less than 5 folks willing to
ante up on this. Please contact me if you're interested and I'll forward
the numbers on to Weddle.

Here's what's available currently:

1. Lock-Right lockers were bought out two years ago an no longer produced/NLA
2. The guy who sells NOS LSDs only has units for the bug transaxles
3. No Quaife available for the 091 trans.
4. When available, Weddle has ZF limited slip units available for $800-1,000
but all parts are used. There are no new clutch packs for these. A NOS
unit would probably fetch at least $1600!

Quaife anyone?

As much as I'd love one $1200 US plus shiping is way out of my budget!!

If anyone is interested let me know and I'll pass on his e-mail.

Hi

There was a guy in south oz doing quaiffe copies, maybe he could do them. Keith Hausler knows who he is. I have a quaiffe in my bug, they are not ideal for off road work.

If your need for an LSD is low speed work over rocks etc., why just use a twin handbrake setup, it would be a doodle to rig up in Kombi.

When I used to do hill climbs years ago, I was running a 1640 and my mate was running a 2180, he could go around the last hairpin on Silverdale hillclimb without any wheel spin, where my 1640 would just about stop on the same corner. He finally told me that he would do one run and see which corner he had trouble with and adjust his handbrake accordingly.

I really wish that LSD's/lockers weren't so hard to get or expensive. I just don't understand what the big deal is. Why the hell can't ARB offer us a locker for the same price as any other car?

I've seen a Kombi Auto fitted with an LSD out of an IRS Commodore. It was fitted to an Offroad Buggy and i guess with a little engineering it wouldn't be too hard.

Yes, I've also liked the idea of two leavers (one for each handbrake cable) for tight spots. Anyone done this?

1302steve, if you have some details on the company making the quaiffe copies I'll send it over, they may be able to sell some to the startes!
