Adjusted your clutch recently?

its63b - June 30th, 2005 at 09:31 PM

i had it reallined and tighted about 2 months back? a new cable was put in and the mechanic did a dodgy job on it,thats why i needed to get it tighted etc, woud that affect wheels coming off?

Dasdubber - June 30th, 2005 at 09:43 PM

I think it was a reference to whoever would have adjusted the clutch will typically remove the rear left wheel to gain access.....so potentially someone didn't tighten up the wheel bolts properly :o

If it was done on a hoist however without removing the rear left wheel, then the above doesn't apply

Can empathise (sort of) almost lost both front wheels in my old 76 bug years ago. Was driving with someone in the car and we were both trying to work out what the vibrations were from. When i got out and shook the wheels I couldn't feel them wobble, but when she walked up the road and watched me drive towards her she saw them really go from side to side!!
Proof from then on that I never trust tyre shops to actually do up the wheel nuts until I can actually touch them. They only did them finger tight then put the hubcaps back on!!!!!!

You picked a fine time to leave me rear wheel:grind::starhit:

Bugger. Glad it wasn't too serious.

Whenever I get tyres fitted now I take the the wheels off the car and just give the tyre shop the wheels. You can negotiate a better price that way too, and you know the wheels haven't been put on with a rattle gun that stuffs studs and drums/discs.

when i have to get them to do the wheel tightening thingy, i always ask them to handtighten em on with the good old wheel brace.. they are always happy to do it as long as you ask them when they fill out the job card..
n always good to watch em do it as well..
nothing worse than the old rattle gun puttin em on at such a rate that they cant be undone without a 14' pipe on the end of the brace.. grrrr...

Know what its like to loose a wheel. Lost my front right wheel once at speed. Dead set scared the b-jesus out of me. The front disked ended up looking like a semicircle. The front wheel kept rolling down the hill and crashed into some dudes tin shed about a klm away at a fair rate of knots. Made a huge bang.

As long as your alright.

sorry to hear about the accident... glad you and car are ok and repairable though.
Good luck with the repairs.

same thing happened to me a year ago on my 62 beetle. it was my fault, but i thought i only poped a tire then when i got out to have a look, my wheel was 50 meeters back up the road!!

bigrudi - July 5th, 2005 at 10:51 PM

hi isaac got to check wheel nuts more ofton especialy if you fit a1916 lost one off my vert 8years ago rear tyre has more clearance now can fit larger rim and tyre

helbus - July 6th, 2005 at 01:02 AM

Fleur had one of the old crossply tyres blow on the rear. The tube jumped out of the tyre and wrapped itself around the axle tube, pulling the handbrake on immediately, locking up the LHR wheel. This happened at 100kph on the freeway!
