I imported one in the '80's- they were real cheap then. Ex Dutch army- I converted it to RHD & drove it as a daily driver for a while. Sold it when the eng siezed & I was too busy to fix it. It ended up in Graham Lees' collection & was restored. I'm told it can be bought now for $Aus20K. Outrageous? Don't know. I DO know they have all but disappeared in Europe & are now quite expensive to buy- try 2-3000 Euros plus all importing expenses for a resto case. They are more plentiful in the USA but these are the IRS models & are in my humble opinion are inferior to the drop boxed LSD military models. There are web sites- look in Samba or search.

I have a THING that lives up the road from me, grey in colour, don't know what model it is......
He has just bought a kombi which he's
restoring.
He also owns a caravelle.
Seems like a very smart guy and has good taste in cars.....

I'll ask him, but I don't think he'll part with it.
It's his daily driver.
I think he realizes what a find he really has!

the country buggy Muller's have is being restored and sent to the wolfsburg museum, as it is a unique model to Oz and they want one for thier display...they are also sending a ruby red 60ish beetle replicating the one that went to Antarctica in the 60,s

Doug Sweetman - March 13th, 2003 at 02:25 PM

There are a couple I know of in Perth, one real nice, the other in resto, but I dont know of any being sold.

Country buggies are easier to find, but obviously not the same.

I read somewhere that the type 181 was produced in Germany for the Armed Forces around 1969 and then shipped the Manufacturing machinery to Mexico, where they were made in 1973 & 1974 only and sold as the "thing".. I did think that they were made in more years than that... I believe Simon Glenn owned a type 182 which was the Right Hand Version of the 181-thing... (I hope My Memory is working OK today Simon] ... they are Virtually None Existant in Australia.... These vehicles have been in Movies especially in Mexico-South America California & Hawaii?? they were usually painted in bright colours... had 4 doors... and were NOTHING like the "Backyard built" Australian Country Buggy " which was made from flat sheet metal... and could have been designed by an Apprentice at VW Australasia in Clayton Victoria... or maybe someone with a drill - grinder and electric welder.... Around 4,200 of these country buggies were made and I believe under 20 are now left... I believe also that type 182 RHD "things" would have sold in Australia... but VW Australasia didn't want Australians driving about in 4 DOOR air cooled VWs.... Did they..!!:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce
