Hi there,

There will be some changes coming soon. I'd like to let you know about them.

We've grown up

We have been asked by our hoster to move to a dedicated machine as we are too busy for the current server. This is a good and bad thing. It's a good thing as we will be able to go faster and offer more services. It's a bad thing as we haven't needed to move for about 2.5 years now, and it's going to be a bit tricky to move us.

I hope that the move will be painless, but as we get closer to the date, I'll post again and let you know how things are going to go down

Sponsorship Changes

We are working on ways to improve our sponsors' access and use of this place. We will have some cool news for our sponsors soon. Watch this space.

Google Ads

We are trialling Google ads to see if they can help supplement our income. The reason for this is that we now need to pay significant $$$$ to keep us alive, particularly once we move. Pending some changes to sponsorship above, we are trying to keep a lid on sponsorship fees, particularly for entry level sponsors.

If you see a sponsor or Google ad you like, feel free to click on it.

Background stuff

With the changes to the host, Gallery will be moving from its current location to within the Aussieveedubbers domain. When it happens, we'll let you know. The Gallery software is also due to be upgraded. This may change how it looks.

The forum software we run is actually beta software - I write it and look after it. A new version closer to release will be applied *after* we move. This will occur in the early September timeframe. There are no real changes to the way the forum will operate or look, it will just have fewer bugs.

Other than that, we have had to re-enable Guest viewing of the site as the no-guest policy was driving database usage through the roof and we are in constant threat of being suspended for abusive levels of activity. We will return to Guest only *once* we have moved to our own host.

thanks,

So Brad is giving you the flick?

What is Jim's ABN number and business name, so I can send a chq for sponsorship.

Do I get a tax receipt ???

Brad - August 20th, 2005 at 10:39 PM

Hi,
No "Brad" Isn't giving anyone the flick ... we have just out grown Brads current server and so we are moving.

Shortly we will send letters out to all sponsors and potential futures sponsors, clubs etc etc and let them know what the ABN and stuff is. Once sorted yes we will be issuing Tax Invoices but will not be charging GST as we aren't registered for it.

New server specs are :

2.4ghz PIV CPU
1 Gb Ram

Once up we will be giving out freee websites for VW relates stuff such as clubs and pers pages, free picture hosting with better upload software. Add to that the forum will be quicker, bigger, more stable and offer members more services I think it will be a great thing ....

We will keep you all posted as it unroles ...

Cheers and keep the faith alive and bare with any glitches that may pop up, there is only 24 hrs in the day and our real jobs take up about 20 of them without hassles.

vanderaj - August 22nd, 2005 at 11:07 AM

The schedule is looking like this for the server move:

* End of the month: new server available to me (most likely)
* September 1-4: Configure new server and perform a test migration
* September 5-9: Server shakedown and performance tuning
* September 10/11: Actual move

The backups and data migration will take approximately 8 hours, during which time the board will be offline.

The change to point the Internet at the new host may take those of you with incorrectly configured ISPs up to 24-48 hours. I will be putting this message into the *old* forum to help you detect this:

[ THIS IS THE OLD BOARD - YOU SHOULD NOT SEE THIS ]

The new board will be open as soon as I can do so.

thanks,
Andrew

Hi there,

we have now started the conversion process. As this started late, I expect the dates in my above post to change.

There will be some changes -

* I am moving the forum to a different domain (forums.aussieveedubbers.com). I'll make it easy for you to find it again
* You will need to log on again, so if you don't know your password, you should change it now.
* The gallery will located at gallery.aussieveedubbers.com when I have taken control of it. That may move earlier than the other changes

Other than that, you should not notice many changes.

Andrew

vanderaj - September 25th, 2005 at 11:33 PM

Hi Folks,

This move is still in progress. We have the nice new server, which is awesomely fast. We've upgraded the gallery above to an intermediate version, but there's a new version on the migrated server. Could I ask everyone to hold off adding any new photos to the Gallery until we've had a chance to move?

thanks,
Andrew

vanderaj - September 28th, 2005 at 05:14 PM

Okay, today's the big day. The forum will not be available from 10.30 pm tonight whilst I do the move.

thanks,
Andrew

We'd better be back Andrew!! :P

vanderaj - September 28th, 2005 at 09:47 PM

We will be :)

When the change happens, everyone will need to log on again after we move. If you come back here via this old URL, you will be redirected to the new URL. Just log on again, and everything will be back to normal. If you have forgotten your password, the "Forgotten Password" link should work, but it relies on you having your normal e-mail address working.

If anyone gets really stuck, please e-mail me vanderaj@greebo.net and I'll help you out.

Andrew

phatrat - September 28th, 2005 at 10:45 PM

propagate to name servers 12-24hrs? Andrew?

vanderaj - September 28th, 2005 at 10:52 PM

Actually it could be as little as a few hours for most. 24 hours is absolute worst case scenario for really stupid ISPs.
