Server move successful
vanderaj - September 29th, 2005 at 03:27 AM

Hi there,

I have successfully moved the forum to the new server. I have also taken the liberty of updating the software to eliminate some of the more annoying bugs.

I have tested nearly all of the common functionality, and it seems to work. However, as we've moved locations, I've upgraded all moderators temporarily to administrators - any moderator or admin can help you reset your password if you get stuck.

If you get stuck with your password, please try:
http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/misc.php?action=lostpw

I've tested this function and it works for me, but the e-mail took a good few minutes to get to me.

If that does not work, please contain *any* of the moderators or admins and they can help reset your password. If all else fails, please e-mail me directly at vanderaj@greebo.net.

If you have forgotten or want the Bad Attitude password, please contact me directly, tell me your username and state that you are over 18. Remember, it's not a forum for the thin skinned or the under 18's.

thanks,
Andrew

u2u folders are not working for me

vanderaj - September 30th, 2005 at 01:50 AM

Okay, I'll check that out :)

Some statistics on our new server. It effortlessly coped with us. :) Yay!

vanderaj - September 30th, 2005 at 01:54 AM

By comparison, our old server regularly used to hover in the load 2-4 area, which means that the server has on average 4-8 processes ready to run, but can't. A load of 1.0 is fully busy.

Although the I/O's per second seem high, not all of them require disk access - most are serviced from RAM. We have plenty of RAM for us ... right now.

In an admin task we use, finding and deleting attachments with no associated posts, the server is 3.67 times faster than the old server. Gotta love that :)

thanks,
Andrew

ta Andrew, ya blood should be bottled. :kiss (for vampires...:P)

vanderaj - September 30th, 2005 at 04:35 PM

Oval - the down link does work for me - what browser are you using?

Andrew

oval TOFU - September 30th, 2005 at 05:21 PM

IE6
It used to work with the old server..
I'm not fussed - i've got a dwnpg button on my keyboard!

vanderaj - September 30th, 2005 at 06:36 PM

Hey, does it work any better now? IE 6 does not understand XHTML (which this software is progressively moving towards, which makes XHTML capable browsers like Firefox and Safari render faster and far more similarly) and the ID attribute for "bottom" was first, which IE can't understand. I also inserted a space in the a tag, so hopefully, IE and all its wonderous bugs might, just might work like any other decent browser.

If it doesn't work after this, I suggest upgrading to IE7 beta or Firefox.

Andrew

I remember one of my mentors telling me the sign of a great administrator was to make systems work for the majority of users.

oval TOFU - September 30th, 2005 at 08:02 PM

nah, not workign still... I'll upgrade ;)

vanderaj - September 30th, 2005 at 11:43 PM

Hot Rod,

To a certain extent, I agree, but to comply with XHTML 1.0 Transitional (which is almost exactly like HTML 4.01), we need to make a few changes to the rendered output. As these changes are usually very minor, it is completely transparent for the most part. With these changes, all the decent compliant browsers (ie, anything BUT IE 6.0), they all see the same thing and it takes me far less time to code this application. Plus, because I force XHTML, they can use a much more modern renderer which has no "quirks" mode. This non-quirk renderer is typically a bit faster than the quirks mode browser.

IE 7 will fix the issues I have with IE 6 (appalling CSS support, mid-90's vintage HTML render engine, many more "quirks" than the others, offensively bad security - you cannot help BUT be infected by spyware if you go anywhere near a pr0n site). So I encourage all IE users to upgrade to it as soon as it is widely available. Until then, I strongly recommend for safety reasons alone to upgrade to almost ANY other browser.

When IE 7 beta is released to the public (not long now!), you can grab it from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/ie7/default.mspx

In the meantime, check out the Technical details. I'm pushing very hard in my bank to force low limits on IE < 7 customers when it comes out to encourage its adoption. IE 7 should rock your world and bring you close to Firefox 1.0's capabilities.

68AutoBug - October 3rd, 2005 at 09:19 PM

Thanks for all the hard work Andrew....

Lee

vanderaj - October 4th, 2005 at 04:45 PM

Thanks Lee. :)

In other news - if you are wondering where many of the older posts are if you are looking through the forum lists (particularly Members Rides and General Chit Chat), we have not pruned any of the forums - the new code only shows the last 30 days by default.

If you want to see all posts in a forum, change the "days" setting (which is currently set to 30) to -1 and press "Go" to see them all. It will take up to 20 times longer - 4 - 8 seconds, which is why we changed the code to restrict it to just 30 days.

thanks,
Andrew

winerot - October 4th, 2005 at 07:12 PM

ah hah i noticed that in coming events it was less
very good so actually we have an archive section now
which means if idle after 30 days transfers to archive.
