New Member - with a dilemma
campmobile1975 - December 10th, 2005 at 01:07 PM

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum. It looks great and the new homepage looks great too. I just want to say Hi to everyone and explain a dilemma I'm having.

I have a '75 kombi with a very sick auto transmission. As in, it will only drive in 1st and 2nd gears. If somebody could help me with a few preliminary questions I'd be extremely grateful.

Are used auto transmissions easy to come by? Are they expensive? Not being a mechanic myself, is it conceivable to replace the transmission myself? Should I not bother with a used transmission and have mine rebuilt? I understand that's very expensive.

Sorry for all the questions but I feel better having asked them. Thanks,

T

You could try giving pick and payless a ring in blacktown, they have a faily decent late bay auto that they are wrecking.

The engine and box where not in it, don't know if that means they are on the shelf or been taken. shelf maybe

not too difficult a job just lots of work and heavy work at that.

engine out is easy enough, not done a trans on a bus done it on a bug

you will need proper axle stands and trolley though
might be stating the obvious there

depends what a back street place might charge for labour as they can't do too much damage, can they?

That is a pity about the gear box.

My 2L auto sticks in first and second but will change to 3rd after say 5kms or so (10mins?)

I had a quote from an auto place to rebuild it - i believe some valves stick and them "pop" and free them selves.

i was quoted $1300 drive in drive out

If you have the box out and give it to them it is about $900

i have been offered 2nd hand boxes that have had current rebuilds for around $3-400

Is the kombi a good one??
If so and you can afford to have it off the road then i would pull the motor and box and get it done properly

Rebuilds in WA are around $800 if you deliver box- This was about 12 months ago

Try the wreckers on the Northern Road out past Cranebrook towards Windsor...he's usually got some. Northern Road Wreckers?

Hi everyone, thanks very much for your posts. As winerot astutely pointed out I do live in Melbourne but based on your responses it sounds like there are some options if I call around a bit. Should I give general auto wreckers a try or should I be sticking to VW specialists at this point?

Cheers,
T
