Just finished watching the original

Was on 7 as the midday movie. Did anyone else see it?

60s uber cool with Steve McQueen (the legend) and Fay Dunaway. But the star of the film IMHO was the corvair powered dunebuggy. American racing wheels with spin off hub mounts and the coolest boxer sound you ever heard.

Apparently the story goes that they approached porsche for a motor but were refused. Later when porsche found out it was steve mcqueen driving they were falling over themselves to give them one. Unfortunately it was too late and the car got the chevy corvair motor.

I got to get the DVD of this.:thumb

Members of the Manx Dune Buggy Club are trying to find out what happened to that buggy. It seems to have disappeared and it is now lost to legend. If it reappears it will be one of the most valuable buggies on earth.

Very nice buggy.

The film itself was beyond tedious.

But with a Manx Buggy zooming around every now and then made it worth watching.

I disagree, I'd call it brooding.

In fact the whole movie was very Steve McQueen. Bullit has a similar feel only he's driving a 427 Mustang. That's the movie that inspired all the car chases through San Francisco. The chase in Bullit was actually filmed in real time, ie, the cars got up to and over 100MPH during the filming. Everything these days is done in half time and sped up.:td:
If you want to play spot the Dub it's also the movie. I have it on DVD, again 60s uber cool.

BTW, Elvis also drove a Manx in "live a little, love a little". Or try "Spinout" where he's racing in an AC Cobra, kicking corvette butt. TAKE THAT BIG DUMB CHEVYS!!! :thumb

steve and fay in period 70s flick tedious - pppffff - next you'll be telling us that the remake of Gone in 60 seconds is better than the original ... of that Grease2 isn't the mother of all sequals.....Vote Pete.

Any one ever read the story about the guy that bought a Ghia from Steve McQueen? What a great read! I'm sure I have it somewhere...

Now for some perfectly useless trivia (ain't it all?)

The Thomas Crown Affair.

The engine thatthey wanted was a Porsche

The engine in the buggy was a Corvair which was designed by Porsche so it half way a Porsche.

The Corvair engine to VW gearbox adapter was probably made by Crown Engineering who were the first to do it.

Ain't coincidences wonderful?
