looking for new tires for my kombi for the big round aus trip. any advice on good hard wearing tires.
I've found that winter-treads are excellent - 195R/14's. They are more noticable in the noise department, but they'll get you to some
great places that other tyres won't, and they compare pretty well for on-road grip too. :thumb
I can't remember the brand off-hand, but I still have a few in the shed if you want me to take a look.
Just a quick search:

I know this has come up often, so there will be more in there if you look. Check out a few tyre places and tell them what your needs are and CAREFULLY
check your fully laden weight and make sure the tyres are suitable.

I was put onto Khumo by my VW specialist.
They are really tough , easier steering , grip well , went good on fuel with first trip with them.
