I am finally converting my split screen container van to the IRS set up. this is the first time i've done this myself, it looks fairly straight forward, I hope everything goes in ok .I am using the Indian Automotive bolt in kit.i have taken friday off to get a big headstart on this. I have reconditioned all the bits going in with new bearings and CV's ect. I can't wait to try out the 1916 without reduction hub's.and it might have to get a little slamin as well........ Oh and talk about good timing my old gearbox lost 2nd gear today.... :o

I'm about to do this myself. I've got the IRS gearbox, but I need to know where to get the IRS brackets (and instructions).
I see you're using the Indian Automotive bolt on kit. Where did you get this kit?

i got the kit from a friend who got it from indian a while ago check out their website it will tell you all about the kits and what else you need. i also found instructions for this conversion on the bus boys.com website. what box did you get and did you get the hubs and axles?

The IRS is from a '71 Super Bug. I've got the complete set up, from the wheels to the gear stick to the clutch throw out bearing.

well what a day stripped out the engine and box cleaned everything till i got bored then i tackled then conversion. for the bolt on mounts i had to trim away the heater tubes (i'll have to get back to that later) then i just threw it in. it all went pretty well, i kept measuring everthing and finished the day with it all installed bar the bump stops..tomorrow i'll install the gearbox and engine then i'll put the wheels on and check the ride heights if thats ok then i'll install brakes and axles and go cruzin.yeeeeeeeha........
65 busser I have kept the wide 5 pattern by using the hubs from a 68-69 bus so the conversion wont be to dramatic to the look of the van for some reason i like the wide 5 and domey hub caps................update tomorrow......

I have seen the Indian conversion done on my mates splittie. Was disapointed that you have to cut the heater tubes out of the way. The next version of the conversion has the clamps at a better angle so you don't have to cut them.
You will need to fabricate some tube in an "S" shape to relocate the hand brake cables. We used the old tube from the "sectioned beetle" on my website. Used some pipe expanders to make it fit up to the original tube. Hope it all goes smoothly for you.

seems ashame to put on CV's when there's those swing axle thingy's which are a lot stronger.

Day 2 checked the height by putting the wheels on without the brakes or gearbox /motor. jumped around in the back a bit and checked levels all ok.so i fitted the brakes and handbrake the cable of which fit like stock to the 68 backing plates and drums drilled and installed the bump stops and shock mounts then I put in the gearbox so far so good next thing put the CV's and axles in, mmmmmm I said put the CV's and axles in..WHAT THE.....THEY ARE TOO SHORT......FARQ so you can't use beetle axles heh FARQ so quick call to a friend go pick up some kombi axles and swap the new Cv's over but as they were fitted up with a press I couldn't budge 2 of them so a quick call to dad who has a press and they will be OK by tommorow mmmm I was hoping to cruise all day Sunday, well as long as it is all OK by Monday I will stop off at an exhaust place and have them fabricate some new heater tubes..the CV's aren't as strong as the swing axles but they are more comfortable ....now next weekend I am going to install adjusters on the front until then I am going to look like I am going up hill I spose but after next sunday SLAMMO the Container Van.. :thumb

ALL DONE well the rest was easy once i had the right axles ...everything has gone back in cleaned restored and painted and it goes great I cant believe the long legs it now has, anyway can't write anymore I am going for another drive ..........:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce
